1  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: Some of my XP keyboard shortcuts have stopped working?! Pls. Help! on: August 17, 2007, 06:57:28 AM
Did you install any programs recently.  Perhaps a registry editing program or some other program took control of this function.
2  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: Cant connect to ONE specific website on: August 12, 2007, 10:56:40 AM
Also, see if you can access the website using a site that hides your location, such as, http://www.anonymouse.org

If you are able to view the website using anonymouse.org, then it has to be either your ISP or it is the site that is blocking you (perhaps they thought you were a spammer, or you share the first part of your IP with a known spammer....I know that for this site, I have had to block many ranges of ips to prevent spam.  Spam is a horrible problem for us website admins, what a spammer will do is set some kind of automated robot that keeps spamming the site from a specific IP.   If that IP is blocked it will automatically change its IP slightly, for example the spam might start from an ip 71.144.23.51.  Then when that ip is blocked it will start spamming from 71.144.23.67 etc.   To block this, the website admin can simply block all ip's that begin with 71.     Changing the first two digits is much harder for the spammer...but the downside of doing this, is that the website admin may be inadvertantly blocking a legitimate visitor who also has 71 as the first two numbers in his IP)  SPAM SUCKS.....It really is this bad.  I have been dealing with it for awhile now.

I'm not sure if I understand correctly...

but, can't you just set this, in your Display Properties.  Right click on the desktop, go to Properties, then go to the Appearance Tab, and change the Windows XP to Classic.

Hi Dave, Welcome Back.

I don't use Itunes either but after researching, I found that Itunes is different works differently than that.  So that will not work (copying them onto a external HD and getting Itunes to open them from there).

I did answer her question (she had a few threads open on the same question), it was posted here:

5  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: Moving XP Vista System Folders to Dynamic Volume? on: July 13, 2007, 07:05:48 PM
You probably are not going to want to hear this...but I really would urge you to not try to move it and instead backup everything you need and wipe the drive(s) and freshly install.  I say this from experience...

Windows can be very particular when it comes to these types of moves.   Even moving something much less intrusive as you are planning usually ends up either making Windows unbootable/unrecoverable or severely degradation of performance.

I have tried and have ended up regretting it.  I even tried moving just a user profile, so that the user profile would be the main one...and although it worked.   The system's performance was much slower.  I tried cleaning up files, registry, and defragging to no avail.    After all of that work, I ended up just doing what I had been trying to avoid (which was a complete wipe and fresh reinstall).

I know how much I did not want to have to do a complete wipe and fresh install, but after weeks & weeks of trying to get my system back to the same performance I had once had, I was more than willing.

And..
are you the only user on this computer?

If you are not, then are the files you are trying to access located in another users' folders?  If the answer is yes, then the files probably are protected by that user.

My bet is that the file you are trying to delete is running.

To get around that, I would suggest booting into safe mode.   Then follow the instructions from the link I gave you .

To boot into safe mode.  Tap the F8 key while you are starting up your computer.  Then when you see the advanced start up screen, select "SAFE MODE".

The first thing you will need to do, is delete some unneeded files.   FIrst, run a disk cleanup, doing that will clear out your Temp files (they are called "Temp" for a reason).

To run Disk Cleanup go to your Start button, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, then Disk Cleanup

Run that, then you should clear up enough space to allow you to move your files to your External Hard Disk
11  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: Locating duplicates on: July 10, 2007, 07:53:02 PM
Hi Karen,

Yes,

There is freeware that does this.   ( You must have been reading my mind....because, In fact, I was just about to post this in the FixMyXP's Best Freeware Article that I have posted and have been updating throughout the month).

The program is called, Duplicate File Finder, and you can download it here:  http://www.tucows.com/preview/373411

12  Other Operating Systems / All Other Operating Systems / Re: help me uninstall windows xp on: July 06, 2007, 11:25:36 AM
If I understand you correctly you are saying that you installed windows media center edition on top of windows xp home?

FYI, Windows Media Center Edition is the same as Windows XP Professional, except it has a extra program (which is the media center), but the core Windows files are the same as Windows XP Professional.

Why are you wanting to go back to XP Home?  are you having some kind of trouble with the new install?
13  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: yeah! ihearya! Hi i'm pc stupid today/night...i lost my desktop! does that on: July 06, 2007, 11:21:14 AM
Hi Laura,

There might be something starting up with your pc that is causing some problems.  Hit CNTRL+ALT+DELETE, then click on "New task" , then navigate to your C:\WINDOWS\    folder, in that folder you should see "Explorer.exe", open that and when you do that should bring back your desktop.

As far as why it is doing this, I would guess Spyware or possibly a virus.   To remedy this go to start, run and type msconfig   then hit enter.  Then go to the Startup tab and go through the list and uncheck anything you don't recognize (note:  everything in this list can be unchecked, and your pc will boot ok.   I just suggest going through the list because there are some things that you want to start, like your virus protection or possibly a Printer).

try that , then reboot and run a full system scan for virus's and spyware.
14  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: Internet explorer bug. on: July 01, 2007, 01:02:33 AM
The firewall could have received a new rule (could have been done accidentally)..

Regardless, I would really suggest that you start using Firefox anyhow.  Firefox is WAAAY better than Internet Explorer.  It's faster and over time you will notice far less issues than with Internet Explorer.   Plus it is free, so you really can't go wrong.

You can get Firefox here:  http://www.getfirefox.com

I am confused by what you are doing...I will try to just start answering some of the questions you asked...

....I'm wondering would it be possible to install windows on my 20gig mp3 reformat that to  NTFS and run windows tho a usb from my mp3...

First, I wouldn't recommend doing this but Yes this is possible as long as your motherboard is able to boot from USB (older motherboards usually don't let you boot from USB).   You can check by going into your BIOS and seeing if you can select USB in your Boot Order.

How do i burn a iso to a disk i just copy and pasted it last time and it couldn't read the file but im useing this active@ ISO Burner now then do i just stick that in me pc thats not working>
This is not possible with the standard windows xp cd burning.  You need a program that can burn Iso's (for example:  Nero )

how do i put windows xp on my mp3 and boot off that? is that possible

As I said above, I wouldn't recommend doing this if you ever plan on detaching the device.   YOu really should have your important system files on a Hard Drive that doesn't get detached and then reattached regularly.
