So I can safely delete all of the "set-up" files for programs that are already installed?
I didn't actually save everything to my documents. I ran that file recovery wizard that I mentioned earlier and it put all of those in there. That's what I'm trying to get rid of. I also didn't know that I could make folders on C:\ I thought those were just on my desktop.
Betcha just wanna scream when a newb does stuff like this, huh?
I tried to break the down and put them into folders by "type" so I can check each folder out and delete a few at a time. I should have sorted them by date maybe? Oh well......here is about 1 1/100 of whats in there. I don't know how Intel drivers got there?
Ok, I took a deep breath and deleted it and I got a popup saying that it was even too big for the recycle bin. So, I deleted it totally.
Then I went back to defrag, ran the analysis and everything was gone....no more huge red stripes.
Any ideas on how to delete all of the files that I can't open? The ones that were retrieved by that backup and restore wizard? The're all in "my documents" How do I know if I need them or not? Also, there are things in "my documents" that Im not sure even belong there....Intel drivers etc. Also, "setup" from d/l programs...can those be deleted once the programs are installed?
The more I think about this....this file could have something to do with a new backup program that I used. I TRIED to put the backup on a flash drive....I'm not sure if it's even on there. But it IS in my documents now.
This is what the defrag report said:
Fragments File Size Files that cannot be defragmented 8,258 17.06 GB \Documents and Settings\MyName\My Documents\3-20-08 Backup.bkf
I didn't have that many things in my documents before I ran the "backup or restore wizard" But they're sure there now. I was wondering if I did a system restore to the day before that file was created....would it be gone? Hopefully all of the others ones that just appeared too.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, I'm getting the picture now. You have a backup file sitting in your My Documents folder.
That file will probably be locked and cannot be defragged for a start. So stop trying to defrag it now.
The problem is - what put it there? Have you ever created a backup file or a restore disk using any program or procedure on your PC?
Do you have a restore disk?
What is the full name of the file/folder that is causing this?
One thing's for certain, that file does not belong in your My Documents folder, not at 17 Gb!! We'll need to identify what it is, and where it belongs. We'll need to do the same with the other 'hundreds' of files/folders that have appeared.
Seems like you might be saving things into My Documents that should be elsewhere.
First, I don't know what FAT32 is. I'm sorry this is all new to me
When I went to defrag, it said that I have 49% free space. The report I mentioned before was what showed after the defrag. I also ran a disk cleanup before the defrags. I don't use outlook express.
I ran the defrag at least 8 times in the past 2 days, including 2 times today in safe mode. The amount was still the same. 8,258 fragments. It says the file size is 17.06 GB. It's located in my documents. At least it looks like the same file named in the report. (3-20-08 Windows backup file......and it says that it is 17,885,190 KB)
When i try to open this file, I get a message saying "the backup utility cannot connect to the removable storage device. Etc etc" Then the backup or restore wizard pops up...this is what I ran last night, and after about an hour it tells me to put in the CD...but it doesn't say which CD. This is where I got the files that are a different version from the originals.
Now, I don't know what the heck happened because when I went into my documents to look for that file....there are now at least a few hundred things there that weren't there yesterday...and I tried to open a few to see what they were but I got a message saying 'not supported" And, I'm afraid to delete anything now.
I'm afraid to delete all of those system restore points, too.
I just ran about 4 anti apyware scans and decided to do a disk cleanup and defrag since it's been awhile. Just maintenance...I wasn't having any problems.
When I used "analyze" on defrag, I saw something that I've never seen before. There were really thick red stripes......it darn near looked like awning stripes....lol. It said I should defrag, so I did. Then it told me that there were 8,258 fragments that could not be defragged.
The only other thing that I did earlier today was to try to clean up my startup folder...I made new folders and put different programs in one folder. This was mostly music programs and anti-spyware programs etc. Could this be the culprit behind the files that can't be defragged?
I just did a system restore.....defragged again , rebooted and nothing changed. The files that I put in folders are still in them...I thought the restore may put everything back the way it was?
I saved the "report" and its showing a backup file that I made on 3-20-08 as the file that can't be defragged. So I went to search, and looked for it.....I clicked it and a file restore "wizard" came up so I let it restore the files. I tried to defrag again, and it stopped and said that these files are a different version than the originals and to fix this I have to insert a CD? It doesn't even say which one? Maybe XP?
I think I made it worse than it was Any suggestions before I do something else wrong?
Don't think that I haven't considered a sledge hammer. If it wasn't my first and brand new pc...it would have been gone a LONG time ago. I'm just glad that it's not a trojan or virus or whatever else kind of malware there is out there!
Anyways...thank you so much for all of your help and patience.
Hope you have a Happy Holiday!! (I may be back with more problems before then lol)
I was using Yahoo's browser and I got that message that it had to close more often than I did on MSN's. Yahoo said that it was a known problem and they were trying to resolve it..but I haven't tried again since then.
No, I never re-registered that dll (at least not that I know of) Do I have to remove something if I do that? Before I contacted you, I did do something that it said to do on that FileXT site that kept popping up, but that didn't help....Ill have to check and see what exactly that was again.
Well, when I tried to download the java vesion 6 that you sent me the link to...I got the same error message again. (msndownloadhost)
If I right click and choose "open with" which type of program would I want to use to open something like that?
I googled this problem last night, and even went to msn's site and it seems others are having this same problem...but no resolutions for it :(
Would this have anything to do with the message saying "msn has experienced a problem and needs to close" I get that quite often and lose everything that I was doing when the browser closes.
I can't expect the system to be running right, because I haven't removed and reinstalled the browser yet.
I updated the java...thanks for the link! I can safely remove the other 5.0 update now, correct? I was afraid to remove it first, because of the original problem...not being able to open some files.
I didn't see a repair option for the MSN. If I'm going to need to reinstall it...I think that I'll wait until I have the chance to call MSN, so they can walk me through it on the phone. I was advised that msn favorites cannot be exported. There is not an export option on the list.
Ok, I uninstalled the J2SE updates 3 & 6. I just got the other update last week....it's outdated already? Should I be looking for another one? I'll have to remember to remove the older ones the next time...I'd have never realized that it could be a problem.
So, are you saying all I have to do is pop in the MSN disk and let it run? (The overinstall) I had an MSN tech on the phone when I did it the last time, and I'm not sure of how we did it. When I first signed up with MSN they set me up online before I got the disk, then told me to call them back when it arrived. I guess that was a DUN that they used? Do you think that it is still on my PC? Any idea of how to check if it's still there?
Will I have to find the dialup numbers first? I think that I had to enter them the last time. Will I lose my favorites etc?
Thanks for being so patient....I'm not doubting that you know what you're doing...I just doubt if I can do what I'm supposed to by myself? lol :)
Ok, I have the MSN9.5 browser....it came with a disk. Are you saying that I can just pop in the disk to reinstall it without removing the old one? I don't even know what all Windows Live products that I have...other than the IM. I was also advised that I might be better off just setting a DUN, as the MSN browser was considered to be a "bloat hog" by many. I currently have MSN dialup along with Verizon/Yahoo DSL. (long story lol) And right now, I'd like to keep both.
I really like this browser, but there have been a lot of problems associated with it...they just updated from 9.0 to 9.5 and a lot of people can't even connect at all. (I am one of the few lucky ones.) It might be because I use the DSL and I don't have to go through their "connection center" which is where most of the probelms seem to lie.
As far as the J2SE Runtime environment programs that you want me to delete? Is this Java? I went through sheer hell a few months ago because of Java. I kept getting error messages and I was advised to uninstall it, and couldn't figure out how. After months of researching it, I found out that I had to install an uninstaller from them, then reinstall it again. I think there were some error messages saying that I couldn't access or do certain things without it? I believe listening to music on Limewire was impossible without it. I'd rather not go through all of that again if I don't have to, because I can't remember exactly what all I had to do, but I DO know that it was not fun.
If you really think that it's important to remove them, I will.......I just don't want any more problems like I had the last time.
By the way....I REALLY appreciate your time and help...thank you so much!
