Article: Disabling Blue Screen Of Death Auto Restart
If you are experiencing system instabilities whereby your computer spontaneously reboots, you may be presented by a blue screen prior to the reboot. This is what's known as a "Blue Screen of Death" or BSOD for short. The purpose of the BSOD is to display information about the error that occurred. Oftentimes, the system will reboot automatically without giving you sufficient time to read the error information. The following instructions describe how to disable the auto-reboot behavior. This will give you enough time to read the error information on the BSOD without the need to trawl through system event logs.

Click the 'Start' button in the task bar- then click 'Run' and type "sysdm.cpl" (without the quotes) and press 'OK'.

This will open the System Properties window. In the System Properties window click on the 'Advanced' tab. Under 'Startup and Recovery' click the 'Settings' button.

Now in the Startup and Recovery window, under 'System Failure' remove the check form the 'Automatically Restart' checkbox.

Next click 'OK' then click 'OK' in the System Properties window for the changes to take effect.

4  Other Operating Systems / Windows Vista / Windows Vista Beta 2 Public Release! on: June 08, 2006, 02:50:58 PM
Windows Vista Beta 2 is now available for public download!

At the time of posting this, the official download link is down due to heavy traffic. Not to worry, though, it's available  from the follwing link:

http://bartysblog.be/content/windows-vista-beta-2-downloads-go-live

And here is the official MS page. You'll need to start the download process there to get your Vista key. But the actuall download will probably still be down:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx

Minimum system requirements:

Make sure you get a key while you can. Enjoy!

I agree with Essexboy, Alternative is the way to go. Althought you shouldn't have to register to anything or be online to install it.

Doesn't seem like many people are playing with Linux then? I suppose that figures, after all this is the FixmyXP forum.  ybiggrin

I've had a bash with a distro called 'Ubuntu'. It was pretty good, a lot better than I thought it would be anyway.

The icon wouldn't show up if you have "Do not show hidden files and folders" checked in folder options.

Does that help at all?

Or just enable Simple File Sharing and make sure both computers are on the same Workgroup. There is a 'Set up home or small office network' wizard in 'Network Connections' control panel applet.

I removed the code from your post. There was just too much. It just confirmed the same as the pic.

You need to impress on your mate the importance of installing SP2 and all available updates. I'm amlost certain that would solve the problem, and things like this will keep happening untill he does. He needs the updated Internet Explorer that comes with SP2.

I personally recommend a FULL FORMAT and re-install, including SP2, all available updates, latest version of his antivirus, some kind of firewall enabled, adware/spyware protection, .ect.

Basically, he need to get with the times.

Prehaps posting the page source would help. Use code tags if you do, please. It might aslo be worth running RootkitRevealer.
14  Windows XP Assistance / Internet and Networking / msg command in xp on: March 19, 2006, 08:03:56 AM
Well you could just use a program such as MSN Messenger. Or Windows XP has a network chat client called Winchat, if you need something that works without the internet. You'll find it in the System32 folder.

Winchat instructions:
1 start, search, "winchat" (or find in Windows, System 32 directory)
2 right click and select send to desktop (for easy opening)
3 run the program
4 choose dial button at the top
5 choose the computer of the person on the network who you wish to talk to.
6 both users must agree to connect to each other to talk.

I have no idea Cache where I read that. I have a sneaking suspicion that it may have been your good self in a thread or post somewhere?
I was niáve enough to think that one could change something like windows that has no maximise or stretch function. In my case the open in / save in boxes, would be a bit more help when searching for files.
Thanks.

I don't remember posting anything like that. It's not that often I get to post about programming at all, really.
