2  Windows XP Assistance / Multimedia, Audio, Video / Problem with Media Player Classic & Volume Controls on: October 24, 2005, 08:17:51 AM
I use the Media Player Classic for my Real and QT files, but everytime I use it, it resets the Wave/DirectSc slider to 50%, and I then have to re-set it to 100%.

Any ideas anyone, as this is just a tad irritating - BTW I use the Media Player Classic because I like it's simplicity, so don't go suggesting I use something else for Real & QT. :P

4  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Worst Windows OS? on: October 20, 2005, 07:52:47 AM

You have to take into account what was available at the time that these OS were out.  Windows 3.11 looks like crap when you look at it now.  But back when it was out, it was looked at as high tech, wave of the future stuff.

So with this in mind, ME has to be the worst.  It was a rush release and was so buggy that nearly everyone that owned it ran into problems right away.....

Pretty much my way of thinking.  I fail to see how anyone could pick 95 either, OK it had its faults, but it was such a quantum leap forwards from 3.11, and it paved the way for 98SE, which had it been less liable to lock-ups and better at memory management, could have been the best ever version of Windows.
5  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Worst Windows OS? on: October 19, 2005, 04:37:12 AM
Let's try again.

In your opinion wich is/was the worst ever version of Windows?

Windows was first launched back in 1985, but for the purposes of this poll I am ignoring versions 1&2, as most of us will have only used DOS before Windows 3.

No thanks, I'd rather be able to sonstruct my own polls.

As a matter of interest, why is the option disabled?

Yeah, I know what the create poll bit looks like in this kind of software, so I'm guessing I need a certain number of posts before being able to do so.

Why does ther not appear to be an option for polls anywhere on the forum - I was going to add one to General Discussion, but found that I can't. :(

And another one...

To open explorer in the classic view (i.e. with C:\ expanded as in win 9x), create a shortcut with path:

explorer.exe /e,C:\

I find this most useful as I tend to live and die in windows explorer. :P

14  Windows XP Assistance / Tips & Tricks / Shutdown Shortcut on: September 29, 2005, 08:16:24 AM
I couldn't live without this shortcut on my desktop.

1) Right-click on the desktop and choose new shortcut.

2) In location type:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00

[instead of -s (shutdown) you can substitute -l (logoff) or -r (restart)]

3) When it's done right-click on your new shortcut, click on 'change icon' (to make it look pretty), and set it to run minimised.

Voila!

P.S. In windows 98, the shortcut is: C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows
