While I was busy cleaning up my computer, I decided to get rid of some music downloaded by my grandchildren (gaining another GB of space) and while doing this I discovered that my mouse was the cause of the problems I have been having. I hadn't suspected it because it was brand new, how stupid can you get. It kept reading my single click as a double click so was opening and closing buttons in one movement, making me think the button wasn't working. I've just swapped it for my laptop mouse and everything is working fine.
Well thanks for that Gentlemen. It's a relief to know that there is an explanation for it, I was worried someone had hacked in and stolen the space for illicit purposes. (okay so I'm paranoid)
I'll do as you suggest about the restore points. I would never have known about the loss of space because I rarely check, and never twice in a week
When I got this pc, 5 years ago, my son told me I would never use all that space, seems he was wrong
I posted this on CA and have had no replies whatsoever so I'm hoping to do better now I can get back in here
Last week I decided to get rid of some clutter in my PC and put most of my photos onto a cd and then deleted them from the computer, after which I was left with 9.87gb free space out of a total of 35.7.
Today I am shocked to find I now only have 6.8 free space, and have no idea where the other three have gone to.
I have done disc clean up and defragging, would a system restore back to last week give me it back? I can't see that it would since I have only installed a couple of tiny games (which I also have on my laptop so I know there's nothing dodgy about them)
I have had to download and install the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) to my new laptop before I could receive automatic updates, even though I already had these shown as turned on. It wasn't until I went to check manually that I realised this. Once I downloaded the validation tool there were 6 updates waiting to be installed
This has just started happening and its driving me crazy. When I click on the 'star' favourites button it should open up on the left side of my screen, but sometimes it refuses to open at all, sometimes it refuses to close. the other buttons on this toolbar all seem to behave normally, but of course it is the 'favourites' button I use most. Have I worn it out?
sorry Dave, I didn't make myself very clear. I haven't actually put a password in place yet. In the instructions on the belkin website, it seems I have to choose to put in a password consisting of 10 numbers. I will obviously have to write these down as I don't think I can remember ten random numbers, and if I lose them I can't access the internet at all?
I would much prefer to use a 'word' password if anybody knows how I can do this??
While I'm here, I use McAfee on line anti virus on my main pc, and was thinking of downloading a free anti virus for the laptop. Will they interfere with each other?
I've just managed to set up a wireless network connection so I can use my new notebook. Very good, no problems.
Now I need advice on password protection. Neither the wizard for the router or the one for the network adaptor mentioned security. On the Belkin website I found info on encryption which seems fairly straightforward, it says to put it on the main pc, but seems to mean every time I want to connect to the internet I need to go and enter my password. Presumably I would need to do this on the laptop as well.
Since I am on broadband and connected all the time, I don't really understand how secure it would be while I am actually connected
