31  Windows XP Assistance / Internet and Networking / NTL upgrades on: February 10, 2006, 10:52:33 AM
I know you won't believe this Gordon, but I've just had an engineer out because of my lost internet connection, (turned out to be a fault in the box in the street).  but I totally forgot to ask him about the upgrade, just remembered after he was gone

I'm with them and I'm just happy when I have a connection at all.

The last time I had to have an engineer out, I was without the internet for over a week, three times waited in and three times he didn't turn up.  I went absolutely ballistic and one then turned up twenty minutes later.

Since we have their telephone as well it would mean changing back to BT to go to another server, and to be honest, when it is working I'm very happy with it, no download limits and very fast.

36  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Running in background/undetected? on: February 05, 2006, 11:33:05 AM
She has tried closing everything she knew about, but nothing worked.  I told her to try defragging from safe mode, but she's even worse than me at trying anything new.

I did put her onto CA forums and she found lots of posts on there about Win98 defrag problems, seems it is a fault on that system, so at least she feels it isn't just her PC.  She intends getting broadband in a couple of months and says she'll definitely get it sorted somehow before then

Essexboy, would that be suitable for windows 98?

My sister is finding it impossible to defrag her pc, it gets to 6% then restarts all the time, like on a loop

40  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / startup on: February 01, 2006, 01:40:07 PM

Hi Fudgem, we've not "met" yet as I'm pretty new around here, but I would just like to let you know that one major problem a "wrong date and time " can give is installation of some windows updates. I have read articles where issues with failed updates has been related to the time being wrong on the pc concerned.
Perhaps if you tell us your pc model we might be able to get info on how/where to change the battery.

Hi Liverbird, I'm an Anne too.

Sorry to be late but I've been away, only three days but you can't imagine how much reading I'm having to catch up on.  Thanks for your offer of help but I had a surprise visit from my dear son at the weekend, and my problem is sorted, (he isn't frightened to open the computer and look at it's innards )

Thanks Dave, I'll get it sorted
43  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / startup on: January 23, 2006, 06:06:55 AM
Thanks Essexboy, I've downloaded that and it seems quite straightforward.

Sorry for my ignorance, but does this dead battery do anything else apart from keeping the clock right?
44  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / startup on: January 22, 2006, 12:29:37 PM
is there any way to control which programme loads first at start up?

The reason I ask is because the battery which controls the date and time needs replacing and I a)don't know where it is and b) just hate opening up my computer.

I have a little programme which puts it right anyway, but I would like to be able to load it before anything else, as I am fairly sure that the date and time being wrong is what is stopping me installing zone alarm
45  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Q about safe mode on: January 17, 2006, 06:35:12 AM
I recently had a problem with my McAfee, and in the process of solving it (via their help) I had to start my computer in safe mode for the first time, gosh, that was exciting (well I'm easily excited)

My question now is, when you've finished whatever you're doing is the only way to get out of safe mode to reboot? or can you start windows as normal from safe mode?
