1  Welcome To The Forum / Forum Help / Polls? on: October 18, 2005, 08:46:58 PM
Hi

For the 1st time I must go along with Nob. :PDT_Love_02:  It's treating your members as if they are imbeciles to have to request polls rather than letting them get on with it. Everything about this forum is different from a normal forum, especially the over abundance of smileys. :-P  Why can't everybody edit their own posts until a reply is added. Now such a fuss has been created about polls there'll probably be stupid ones posted and it serves you right Don. The 1st way to have a happy forum is to trust your members. If the odd 1 goes wrong it's easier to sort it out than have certain members feeling they are inferior

I think it was mentioned that only some members can edit their posts.

Twine what do you mean? Are you telling me that all members of this forum are not equal and some are more equal than others?

This is favouritism and is disgusting. I'm writing to the Equal Opportunities Commission forthwith.

Try clicking on the Edit button.

Dave

Where exactly is this edit button? Why does it say underneath this message "You cannot edit your posts in this forum". Are you sure you are able to edit your posts anymore. You used to be able to.

we must stop taking the p1ss. This is an XP correction site, similar to prison when put that way, though God only knows why a serious nail problem is being discussed in General Chat. :icon_shaking2:

I've never had a nail problem so far but if I ever do I think a chiropodist or manicurist will be my next port of call depending on which extension has the nail problem.

Going back to the subject of this thread does anyone else have a program that might be usefull this save/reformat/reinstall/load process?

Fleamailman

I will never agree with you about reformating/reinstalling unless everything else fails. The average PC user doesn't back things up so reformating is a major exercise. OK you are smarter than most users and everything is stored named and labelled but I reckon you're one in a hundred. So telling the average PC user to reformat and reinstall to get rid of malware is like telling them walk on water which they'd probably find easier than reformating their HD and still have a working PC :-P

I do agree with Peter though. Format and reinstall seems to me to be a bit of a cop out Strum

Thanks Stringula PDT_Love_26

It might be still a poxy idea for every one with a dual disc PC or external save as you go mpeg files because the source of the problem isn't found. My big problem is using a single HD Wins 98 o/s PC where the hell do I back up all my important files. Come to think of it why do I save files if they aren't imortant to me. What I'm trying to say is how many CDs would I need to back up my HD? That's why I think formating a HD is the last resort.

Fleamailman have you nothing to say?

So petersmyth1 would you like to back your opinion with a thread with an altenative idea for newbies to cure their own malware without forum the dependence we see from day to day, I think this weekend should be enough time for you to prepare something don't you think, good luck then.

Fleamailman

Sorry but I don't need until the weekend or to start a new thread to reply to your message. If you look closely at the very end of my post you will see I wrote "to each their own" this was meant to leave it up to each individual which method they used to cure malware problems. You like to format your H D. all I was doing was saying in my opinion that method was like using a sledge hammer to crack a nut.

If I using Google I can find specific "cures" for the majority of malware problems and using them is a lot less trouble than formating your HD.

Fleamailman you're perfectly entitled to your opinion on how to remove malware just as I'm as entitled to question your opinion or do you disagree with that.

btw I agree with you about HJT in a way. You'll learn nothing about your PC but on the otherhand if you copy and paste the HJT log in the right web site the response is pretty quick. I've used it once and they said my log was OK  :smileywithwings:

Dave & Fleamailman

Dave I don't know why I included you since you like me have never formated your HD but I think it was because you advocated additional expense to back up important files, drivers etc.

When I bought my PC,a small private company within walking distance, I wasn't told you need an MPEG' extra expence, because every 6 months or so you'll need to back up and format your HD Can I get him under the Sale of Goods Act or is Fleamailman just trying to look important.

Fleamailman I don't know what the hell you do with your PC but mine, 2 years since last upgrade, is working the way I want it to so why should I format my HD. I always think formating is a defeatist's way to cure PC problems because you are learning sod all about what caused the problem. Far better trying to physically get the better of it instead of admitting you'll never understand PCs and reformating. If You have a minor accident in your car do you buy a new one or try to get it repaired. If you mention car servicing at this point all  I can say is they don't replace the engine at any service or turn the milometer back to zero.

So there you go I think reformating your hard drive is to be avoided if possible but each to their own way of fixing problems. :-P

I'm as confused as you. I've seen this advice given many times in other PC help forums but this is the 1st time I've ever heard that you lose all your previous updates. For God's sake it's repairing it not reinstalling it.

Don can you explain? :-?

You've never got back so I presume it's sorted.

On the off chance it isn't you could try repairing IE, OE is part of IE, Open Control Panel> Click
Add/Remove> Scroll down the list and highlight IE> Click the Add/Remove
button> In the resulting window tick the repair option> Click OK.

If your o/s is XP, one of the ways to repair IE is to use the sfc command:

Click Start> Run> Type in

Sfc /scannow (note there is a space after sfc) and click OK

This will scan and restore protected system files (which IE is).

This may solve your problem but if it doesn't there's no harm done.

Blade

I'm not into the technicalities of the different forums I'm a member of but surely if one forum can have a feature like limited time editing another forum, if it wanted to, could write that facility into its program. Maybe I'm being silly but if it is on one forum's template why is it not on them all?

Blade over a year ago I was a member of a couple of Yahoo, I think, holiday forums and both of them had time limited editing. I suppose I'm still a member of both. One was

Editing is good for typos

Nik

What the hell's the preview panel for if it obscures typos. Bad links can be amended in a later post. If the preview function was used properly there should be no need to edit posts. Now taking the Ovaltine factor into account the edit function can be a saving get out clause especially if you can edit your post into the next centuary.

Who invented this load of crap for this forum's format? Most of my other forums have a time limited edit facility.
