Fudgem,

Once you've installed SP2, and if you have auto-update on, you shouldn't need to worry about anything else.

If ever you need to reinstall Windows, you will need to install SP2 and all updates again. BUT a reinstall of Windows isn't needed very often (I NEVER have had to) and would be last resort anyway.

thanks boys.  First I should have said that I run McAfee on line so I'm quite sure it isn't a virus.

No, Microsoft don't identify the driver, just say the shut down is caused by driver error.

I run OE 6, which was installed when I first got the computer, about 4 years ago.  I have windows set up to download updates automatically, I have just gone looking for non crucial ones and found two for OE which I have now installed, haven't had a shut down since so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I've saved your tip about taking out the option to restart Strum, but I'm nervous about it.  If it doesn't shut down and restart, what does it do?  just collapse?

You may have noticed I'm not very confident about the computer innards :umn:

Fudgem,

With the restart on system failure disabled, you will probably get an error message instead of it shutting down. Or you may get a program not responding message.

This will help you identify what is going wrong. The message back from Microsoft about driver error is a standard response and usually means they haven't a clue what is wrong. I stopped sending the error reports to them within weeks of upgrading to an XP machine.

So, don't worry about your PC collapsing in a heap, and if you get something you need help in resolving, that's what sites like this are here for - to help you.

Go for it - disable that restart on failure.

Good on yer Strum - always ready to help.

Something else to do:

If you are using XP (you must be) it will be set to restart if anything major goes wrong - like with a driver. You can turn this off.

Right-click on My Computer
Properties
Advance tab
Settings

Take the tick out of the option to restart on system failure.

That may allow you to find out exactly what is going wrong.

Can't see why you would want to avoid the validation check.

All of it I would imagine. Could be illegal though. Are you running a pirate copy? I wouldn't think that the site owner condones such things.

Jason,

Add my voice to the protest. You definitely need to keep the shop window open for all to see.

I have clicked on every advertising link - so funds will have increased already. I'll do it regularly.

Now, what I'd like to know  is, how much to buy your book and get it shipped to the UK?  If I like it, maybe I could become a bit of an agent for you and sell it to my customers (I teach &  give PC support).

Don,

Still unable to access the Functionality Issues board - it brings up a message saying that this is restricted to moderators etc.

Any news on why?
