16  Windows XP Assistance / Installation, Startup or Shutdown Problems / Re: com can't boot on: April 23, 2008, 09:04:19 AM
Is this the same PC that you posted about earlier?

http://www.fixmyxp.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,205/topic,2044.msg16367#msg16367

Does the hard drive spin OK? If it does, are you able to get to the safe mode start options?  (Press F8 as it's booting up.)

If you can get to Safe Mode options, try starting with 'last known good configuration".

The burning smell is worrying, could be your power supply isn't working properly, motherboard 'fried' or simply the hard drive is dead.

You're going to have to give us more details. It may be that this will need Essexboy's expertise on HJT analysis, but first more info please.

How are you connecting the mouse - usb?
Try in another usb port.

Have you checked mouse settings via Control Panel?

Does the mouse still work in the other computer?

You could try installing a new set of mouse drivers - here's a search page with sources of drivers to download:  http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Intellimouse+drivers&btnG=Search&meta=

I don't think that this has been mentioned, but have you thought of trying Revo  Uninstaller to remove Office 2003? (And anything else that's clogging the system.)

Betcha just wanna scream when a newb does stuff like this, huh?

Aaarrrggghhhhh dribble

IF the files were put there by the recovery program as backups, then you can delete them. As a safety measure, put them all into a folder on your desktop instead of deleting, just to be safe. Then (as I said previously) if no problems have appeared after a few days - go ahead and delete them.

Hey - we were all 'newbs' once. And there's folders/files on a PC that even I am not sure about the need to keep or ditch. Thankfully, most of them are hidden away in the system so I don't need to worry about them.

If I were you, I'd create a folder directly on C:\ called 'Downloads' and store any downloaded programs in it.

I can see that you have been saving everything into My Documents. Not a good practice.

I'm not sure about the Intel folders - park them somewhere safe for now. Perhaps another folder on C:\ called 'My Files' and move anything you're not sure about into it.

The only files or folders that would normally be in My Documents are what you created using programs such as Word, photo programs etc.

Look at the dates that files/folders were created, that will give you a clue. Any that have dates coinciding with when you ran your backup program will be (mostly) what that created.

Yes - you can post links here.

Essexboy,

There was a fix that worked in the thread here:

http://forum.kaspersky.com/lofiversion/index.php/t61039.html

It involves some manual registry edits.

Any help?

Something has made this topic spread out across too much web page! Not sure what it was, but it only appeared after your last post.

Without seeing all the files and folders you have, it's impossible to say if there are some files that you might need to keep. However, I suspect there aren't any as, usually, system files will be in Windows or program folders, not in My Documents.

Any backup files or folders that have been created there aren't needed either, because they will be created again on your storage media when you backup to the right place - an external device or cd/dvd.

What you could do, as a safeguard, is to create a folder called 'Junk' and drag all those files and folders into it. Leave them there for a while, ensure everything ins working OK and nothing is suddenly asking for a missing file. Once you are satisfied that all is OK, delete all of the folder you created (Junk) and it's contents.

After you've tidied up, then you can do your housekeeping and defrag again.

System restore won't remove, or change, data files - and that is what the backup files are. You should delete those files, they won't defrag and they aren't any use to you in the event of a hard drive failure because they are stored on it.

Full backups should be stored on a removeable drive or perhaps a DVD. A flsah drive isn't going to be big enough.

When you have a suitable external storage for a system backup, make sure you set your backup program to save to it.

Essexboy should be able to help you solve this, you have an infection called "RenameLoi.A".

Wait for him to come on line, he'll guide you through the fix process.

OK, I'm getting the picture now. You have a backup file sitting in your My Documents folder.

That file will probably be locked and cannot be defragged for a start. So stop trying to defrag it now.

The problem is - what put it there? Have you ever created a backup file or a restore disk using any program or procedure on your PC?

Do you have a restore disk?

What is the full name of the file/folder that is causing this?

One thing's for certain, that file does not belong in your My Documents folder, not at 17 Gb!! We'll need to identify what it is, and where it belongs. We'll need to do the same with the other 'hundreds' of files/folders that have appeared.

Seems like you might be saving things into My Documents that should be elsewhere.

When I used "analyze" on defrag, I saw something that I've never seen before.
There were really thick red stripes......it darn near looked like awning stripes....lol. It said I should defrag, so I did. Then it told me that there were 8,258 fragments that could not be defragged.

There's a few files that the XP defrag tool won't be able to defrag:

System volume information
System Restore points
Pagefile

You could remove all but the latest system restore point to free up space:

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest restore point.

The amount of free space is important when running Disk Defragmenter. A minimum of 15% is required but sometimes more to cope with  more large files.

You can run Disk Defragmenter a second and third time if files are still fragmented after the first run.

If you use Outlook Express compacting folders before running Disk Defragmenter may help.

I just did a system restore.....defragged again , rebooted and nothing changed. The files that I put in folders are still in them...I thought the restore may put everything back the way it was?

Restore deals mostly with registry, not data. So, any folders with your own data in them won't be touched. Programs you installed will after the system restore point will be removed though.

I saved the "report" and its showing a backup file that I made on 3-20-08 as the file that can't be defragged. So I went to search, and looked for it.....

What report is that? The defrag report?

Quote
I clicked it and a file restore "wizard" came up so I let it restore the files. I tried to defrag again, and it stopped and said that these files are a different version than the originals and to fix this I have to insert a CD? It doesn't even say which one? Maybe XP?

Without knowing what the report was, I couldn't say. I am guessing that you have run a system file check - and reporting that some files are different versions is normal because you will have updated many files through normal Windows updates. You shouldn't, normally, replace any.

I think you should be trying one more system restore to before you started 'tinkering' and ensure that your system is working OK before trying anything else.
