Hi again
Just some info on my problem that might help somebody else. Problem seemed to be caused by a system file  Daemon Tools loads during safe mode startup. You have the option not to load this during safe mode boot but this didn't work for me. I probably caused the problem by leaving the virtual drive loaded all the time-just didn't think of it. Too late to test this as I have already clean installed XP. I have gone through a lot of software over the years so a clean install was a good idea, despite all the hassles. In researching this issue, I found that a some of people were having boot problems after installing Daemon Tools. I think that I will stick to the Windows emulator from now on. I am not condemning Daemon Tools as there could have been other contributing factors.

Thanks to Dave and Essexboy for your help. I will keep that safe mode zip for saving me in the future.

All the best

Richard

Essexboy-too late!
I have already done a clean install, just catching up getting things back to where I want them, but I will treasure that zip file for next time
I tried a repair install but no help, problem persisted.
I had Daemon Tools installed and that is probably the source of the problem according to my research and my logs. It seems to interfere with some registry files, hopefully, the Windows emulator will not cause a problem as I store a lot of my backups as iso files, and I like to have access to them without burning.

I guess that I got a clean install of my graphic drivers this time!!!!

Thank you for the help

Richard

Dave
I am in the process of downloading the necessary tools and backing up everything. Will take a while as I have to do some other stuff today. I have the XPSP2 install disc, my install is patched up to date. Can slipstreaming include all the patches should I need to use it?

Thank You
Richard

I was wondering if there is an application I can use to track internet connections as they happen? I have always been curious about all those automatic connections that XP makes when I log on and all the other apps that are trying to make connections as well. I tried Who Is but it seems to only identify the local server. I can block them with my firewall but I know that some are connections for auto update etc. Call me paranoid or just curious yquestion
