1  Other Operating Systems / All Other Operating Systems / Re: members views on linux on: February 18, 2008, 04:39:34 AM
it has been about two years now that I gave up windows for linux and never looked back, mostly on kubuntu but more recently I have been on mint linux not because mint is better but just because there is no after install with mint linux as everything(mp3, streams, codexes, etc.) is bundled in from start(as opposed to having everything allowed in later) meaning that one just does the live CD test for drivers and if all the drivers are recognised, then one just installs. It works with 256ram but I find it perfect on 512ram. The only downside for me is that Mint is gnome whereas I find kde to be lighter, but driver recognition is better on gnome. Anyway if someone here wants to try linux I would suggest mint to start with, thanks
2  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: msinfo32.exe and taskmanager on: November 21, 2006, 03:36:43 PM
thanks essexboy, glad that you are onto this, my question one by one then
- if one looks in software environment, the running tasks are the same as my prossesses in taskmanager, is this right
3  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / msinfo32.exe and taskmanager on: November 21, 2006, 05:40:02 AM
Ok, I have the processes in taskmanager and also I have the running tasks in msinfo32.exe,

questions;
- are these two things the same or different in some way,
- if they are the same, for example I don't think I can copy posseses in taskmananger whereas I can in msinfo32.exe, does that help me
- if one doesn't have time to do the full hjt log thing, would msinfo32.exe point to the bad processes
- why is msinfo32.exe not seen much in posts on forums, it looks very good but until today I had only vaguely seen it

5  Chat (Off Topic) / Tech Talk / cristal ball time 2, personal websites will take over from emailing on: October 18, 2006, 01:47:57 PM
Just as we have seen that anyone who once had a computer then started to get on th Internet, then went on the have an email address and these days most of us now have our own websites too. So now if I want to contact someone I know I can catch him or her on their website in stead of emailing them. No this post is not saying that emails will not be used since I do understand the need for important stuff to be kept private personal and secret but I am just surprised to see the number of people who are corresponding via websites rather than emails, example being my children who both have email addresses but never use them, prefering either msn chatting or posting to each others website or meeting on someone elses website somewhat like meeting in the pub so to speak they can chat together open to someones elses comments from the side. The biggest difference is that posting on someones website is welcome because that for the most part is thought  of as adding content like now whereas sending an email directly means that the receiver should reply which if there are other emails to be answered is less welcome, I predict that more and more people will say 'yer, contact me on my website then' rather than 'here is my email address', unless as I have already mentioned it is personal or private.

8  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / messesges from switch until post arrival, any links please on: October 10, 2006, 12:56:15 PM
Hi, I am looking for links that cover the vairous messesges from the point of switch on until post arrival

I am fed up with posters posting that 'x or y message has appeared on the screen' and me having to google it for them, so it not just the usual bsod errors, but anything that would fall under this then, for example 'press F1 to continue', 'no system found, etc., also for the moment it is just BIOS and XP that that I am covering, later I can expand from there.

imput and links welcome

result shared, promise

10  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: 'Windows - Delayed Write Failed' on: October 07, 2006, 09:19:06 PM
some questions:
- do you have a back up of your system,
- is your data backed up
- do you have at hand or can get copies of the programs you have installed since you bought the computer
- if you do not have a back up of your system, would you like to go to stage two of those three links I gave you
to see if this is malware based, eitherway a malware removal forum will ask you to do the steps or similar before you submit you HJT log to them(all explained in second link)

if no one here can come up with a better plan of action I would be looking at either restoring from you backup cd, (restore disk, or other type), - or I would be looking at having the problem seen to by a malware removal forum.
11  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: comand promp and ctl alt del issue on: October 07, 2006, 08:52:56 PM
ranril, if you have a good back up, I agree and if the last back up a few days ago I agree more so, I am the same but  here I was suggesting having the hjt log seen to at a malware removal forum. I haven't any money so I back up with snap backup and this is all interesting but I believe the point of this thread is to solve blake1875 problem who might not have your solutions ready installed, next time he will perhaps, btw can we get back to his problem then,  addressing him not me?
12  Windows XP Assistance / Installation, Startup or Shutdown Problems / Re: ALL ICONS + START MENU MISSING FROM DESKTOP on: October 07, 2006, 08:34:25 PM
questions:
- pressing the winkey plus the r button can you open the runbox
(thinking of sfc/scannow)
- do you have a cd of XPhome handy
- if these two are out do you know how to repair will CD
- can you get into the comp via safemode
- can you still see the processes via tastmanager
- can you still use mscongif to disable startups.

13  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: 'Windows - Delayed Write Failed' on: October 04, 2006, 11:04:08 AM
I suggest a total spring clean of the comp at
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3835

the if still the problem is there, the malware removal steps at geekstogo at
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/You_Must_Read_This_Before_Posting_A_Hijackthis_Log-t2852.html

the if still the problem is there, the actual malware removal with HJT log at
http://www.virusvault.co.uk/fusionbb/fusionbb.php?

Geekstogo removal steps are good but it is always very busy with a long wait,
the vaultis good too but is not busy yet because it is new
14  Windows XP Assistance / General Problems / Re: comand promp and ctl alt del issue on: October 04, 2006, 10:53:57 AM
Restoring back is a solution but I suggest taking advice from 'the vault site' both to have that trojan removed and what to do in future.
