You need to make sure your hard drive is recognized by the BIOS. Go in the BIOS find the primary master or IDE Channel 0 in Standard CMOS Features. If it shows the drive set it to auto, then hit enter. Hit escape to exit to main screen, hit F10 say yes and hit enter. Also make sure your BIOS is set to CD as 1st boot device. Then you need to wipe the drive insert the CD and reboot. Make sure the hard drive is formatted in NTFS

If that fails then check that your IDE cable is in good nick

Also check that your RAM is OK, if you have 2 sticks remove 1 then try. If that doesn't work switch sticks and try again

Do you have another IDE cable ?

Do you have a floppy drive ? If so try this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/en-us

Download and create this Boot Disk Set for XP. To do this, save the file to your desktop and double click on it to start creating the floppy set. You will be prompted to insert the floppy during the creation process...this set will require six floppy disks. Choose the correct set for your operating system...the links are about half way down the page.

See if you can boot the machine into Recovery Console using this boot disk set. If you are able to use Recovery Console, type chkdsk /r at the prompt, and press "Enter". You may be told that the volume is busy and asked if you want to schedule the check for the next boot...type Y and press "Enter".

This will be a pretty long check if it runs correctly...up to an hour in most cases...longer in some. Be patient and let it complete even if it appears to be starting over a few times.

iastor.sys is for raid and sata drivers which I assume you don't have in a laptop...

Research tends to suggest a HDD or ram failure... did you try memtest or you could try the BARTPE http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/  which gives you a live xp cd although with limited functionality

Quote
Bart's PE Builder helps you build a "BartPE" (Bart Preinstalled Environment) bootable Windows CD-Rom or DVD from the original Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 installation/setup CD, very suitable for PC maintenance tasks.

It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for burn-in testing systems with no OS, rescuing files to a network share, virus scan and so on.
This will replace any Dos bootdisk in no time!
