I am new to this forum.  Tried to say "Hello" in the Intro room--post didn't work.
My problem is that my files are not being found by Windows XP Pro, SP2, subsequent to a clean reinstall (which completed perfectly).
I have functionality of keyboard, mouse, windows explorer, navigation throughour the system, but no internet connectivity, and files restored from a Windows-backup on another partition do appear in C drive, but do not work.  Network settings shows connection to my router (wired) are detected.  Shortcuts on the desktop give an error message the "The drive or network connection that the shortcut refers to is unavailable."
Any ideas on how to proceed?
Thanks,
craigo from Ashland, Oregon

Craigo,

First, Welcome to the FixMyXP forum...

About your problem, You say that you did a Clean reinstall?   A clean reinstall wipes all of your old data and installs Windows  XP.  It doesn't save your files.

Perhaps you mean that you did a repair install?  Repair install does not wipe all of your old data.  When doing a repair, it will go through all of the same installation process, the only difference is when you see the screen where it asks if you want to repair, you hit R instead of installing fresh.

Here is the guide for a repair install...take a look and see if this was what you did:

Thanks, windowsxp550, for the welcome and the reply.

Yes, I did a clean install, with C partition reformatted.
I had backed-up the files and programs on another partition of the HD, using Windows backup, and also with Acronis backup software.
Windows was lean and clean untill I restored files and programs from E partition.  I did not restore any Windows system files, only applications or programs, and documents and data.  And I set the restore to not replace older files on C.  I did not keep the boxes in the restore wizard checked where I could keep certain nodes or points on the drive.  I do not have any files recognized in the Add/Remove Programs list except Adobe Reader which I reinstalled.

Ok, so if I understand you correctly, before you clean installed windows you copied your My Programs folder and other docs that you wanted saved to another partition.  Then once Windows was reinstalled , you copied back the My Programs and the docs?

copying the My Programs back, will not reinstall the programs you had. You will need the program installer(s) to reinstall programs.   That is why they aren't listed in your Add/Remove Programs...

Yes, that is correct.  Reinstalling the programs should be easy enough, but what should I do with or about the program files which I "restored"?  Can I just leave them, or delete them before installing?
And how should I proceed to get Windows to connect with my router?

Just re-installing the programmes should work, unless you have modified any of the folder names they will write to the same folder, and more importantly they will write the registry keys which are needed to run the programmes.  Which is why a straight copy of the folder onto a clean hard drive will not work. You should have an installation disc with your router unless it is plug and play with a windows generic driver.  If it is a USB router just plug it in, if it runs from an ethernet card then run the hardware wizard.  Oh and welcome

550: Eavesdropping on your reply to Craigo answered an unasked question for me: Will saving Programs Files reinstall programs after a "clean" procedure?  Apparently the answer is no...save the Installs instead!  Thanks glupek2
