Hi again, Jason:  I bounced around in the links you found but apparently there is no BIOS update listed for the XT853.  I surrender ycry

That is pretty much what HP told me a week or so ago when they also said they thought my Standby/Hibernate problem was an MS software issue and sent me the KB302713 link.

As to your questions:  I originally had ME; when I upgraded to XP my problems started.  I knew nothing about doing a BIOS upgrade at that time.

Ron

PS:  Liked your article on failing to boot/last know good....Learned spmething new there also :)

Hi Ron,

Hope you don't mind me joining in. Most of the 'action' on your problem happened while I was away for a holiday (vacation for the US of A), and it has been quite interesting to read.

I looked at the HP pages that Jason found and it doesn't look like you will be able to upgrade your BIOS. As it is a relatively old board, HP are unlikely to do anything about it so I reckon you have three choices:

1. Live with the loss of power options.
2. Obtain a copy of Windows ME and revert back to that.
3. Buy a new base unit.

Option 2 is most likely to just cause you grief.

Option 3 should be fairly cheap as you can buy a unit without an OS because you already have it.

I think you are right to give up now, if you decide to replace the base unit, you can use the hard drive and maybe other parts (floppy and Cd drives) from the existing PC.

All the best.

Thanks to you, Dave, and all you others for the help and advice:  you're  all  hooray

As this  "Gordian Knot" cannot be untied, I'll live doing the maual Standby/Hibernate until I buy something else.

You have a great site from which I have learned a bunch of helpful hints and fixes...worth more than my donation, for sure! ..... thanks. :)

ybiggrin   About a week ago, I forgot to put the computer into Standby manually.  When I came home about five hours later, the power button was blinking.  Much to my surprise, it was in Standby on its own. Strange, eh what!?!

The setting it is doing it on is:  Monitor off at 10 mins, Standby at 15 mins. [Hib and HD at never].  I tried once to modify it by having it go directly from SS to SB but it would not work [SS stayed on for over an hour].  When I reset to Monitor to go off at 10 mins, the SB started working again.

I am content with what I have...thanks to all that helped. ..Ron
