Unless you are running scripts yourself, it is safer not to use WSH at all. (I assume you are using Windows XP) This is a quote from the Symantec web site:

Quote
Disable or uninstall the Windows Scripting Host
One preventive measure that you can take to protect yourself from viruses that come as .vbs attachments is to disable or uninstall the Windows Scripting Host. Because Windows Scripting Host is an optional part of Windows, it can be safely removed from your computer. This feature can easily be re-installed if it is required in the future.

Also in Internet Explorer, you should go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and under the browsing section of the list, make sure that both of the 'Disable Script Debugging' options are enabled.

I am trying to run this tool to reset my firewall.  I have used it before with no problems.  If I uninstall Windows Script Host, what script will be used.  I,m new at using computers, so have patience with me.

  Thanks, Nicoletta

I've never heard of anyone running a script to reset a firewall. What firewall is it?

Why do you think your firewall needs a reset?

I modified some of my Rule Settings and now I cannot restore what I originally had. What do I do?

Quote
The following utility will reset the configuration information in Kerio. If you get any security warnings about a script running, please allow the entire script. Also if Kerio warns about one program launching another program, please allow this as well. After the utility has run kerio will be reset back to defaults, and may ask you about programs accessing the internet again.

Got this from the site ref the script, so it looks like the rules are slightly messed.  Unfortunately I have no knowledge of Kerio, but in ZoneAlarm to reset all I do is delete the programmes from the allowed list and ZA will re-ask next time they are used..

I seem to be having more problems.  It started when Kerio Firewall stopped letting me log on to Msn. I had this happen before and was told to use that tool.
I can't run it because Windows Script Host is disabled. I downloaded "noscript.exe" to enable it.  Then when I try to run the tool it asks me what to open it with, and I have no clue.

Now when I boot, Avast, PestPatrol, and WinPatrol and inactive.  I have to reset active protection, and put them in start up.
I ran everything in safe mode, and found nothing. I'm at a loss here, and getting frustrated.

Can you guys help me out?
 Would a HJT report help?

   Thanks, Nicoletta

Hi Nicoletta,

How about downloading Zone Alarm and ditching Kerio?

noscript.exe is a tool to disable WSH, so this is why you are having problems with resetting Kerio.  From what I've read, it also plays around with file associations on VBS files, which is why you are having troubles running the fix tool.

If you used Symantec's "Noscript.exe" program to disable Windows scripting host, you can easily re-enable WSH if you need it temporarily. Put a shortcut to noscript.exe on your Desktop or in your "Start" menu to make it easier.

You could try using System Restore to get to a point before you installed noscript.exe - that may resolve everything.

Then replace Kerio with Zone Alarm.

At this stage, I don't think a HJT log will help.

A very quick and dirty fix would be to uninstal Kerio and then run a fresh install that should reset all the permissions to default .  But I would suggest after removal and before install that you delete all folders relating to Kerio.  If it would put your mind at rest then post a HJT and I will look at it.  I am currently training as an HJT advisor so I may not be fast but (modestly) I am quite good.

Noscript.exe disables, and enables WSH. I installed it after I had the problems. When I used it to disable it, windows asked me for a program to open it.  And when I enabled it I was told it was disabled... yathink

Essexboy, I did that and it works fine. But I am still having problems.  My subscription for PestPatrol is going to expire in two months, and I keep getting nag messages telling me about it.  I hate nags, so it turned me off and I am not going to renew.  I figure if they are that stupid, I don't want them.

I  tried to install CounterSpy, but I'm having the same script problem.  Its the same company as Kerio, so I am going to contact them.  That and some of my settings being reset, I don't know whats going on.

I will do a new HJT. Do I post it here?
  Thanks, Nicoletta
