hard drive disappeared?
«
on:
August 26, 2006, 05:54:54 AM »
hello
I have two disc drives on my PC, a 20gb C drive and a 40 gb F drive. my C drive was full so I moved all the non essential items such as pictures and music to the F drive and ran the disc clean up and defragmenter to clear space. now my F drive does not show up in the my computer screen. I have gone through the help menu and the troubleshooter and got no where. the drive does not show up in the command prompt or the disk management screens but it does show on the device manager as working properly and having no need to update a driver.
can anyone think of anything I can do to get it to show up again. I did system restore but it said no changes would be made to the F drive as this had been disabled or removed.
Thanks

It is possible you might have corrupted the driver. Try this:
Go into your Device Manager. Then under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers you should have two (or possibly three) things listed here. Now assuming that your F drive is attached as a slave (more than likely it is, since you are booting from your C: drive) you will want to locate the Secondary IDE Channel. Right Click on it, and Uninstall it then reboot (Do Not worry, Windows XP is a plug and play Operating System, so when you reboot what will happen is Windows will detect and reinstall the drivers for the Controller and the hard drive)
When you reboot, Windows XP will start the auto-detect and will reinstall your Secondary Controller and then the drive. (you will see the messages pop up down by the clock). Once it is done, check MY Computer and see if the drive is back.

Hi Jason
thanks for that - tried it, it did find new hardware but this seemed to be just the CD drives and it did not bring back my F drive. does this mean I have broken it completely?

I had something similar, and I fixed it in:
Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management
I can't remember what I had to do, might have been something as simple as assigning a drive letter.
If the drive is showing in the Disk Management panel, it should be clear what you can do from the right-click menu of the drive.

Linda,
Whoops, If when you rebooted it found the CD DRives, then that means that we did the procedure to the wrong Controller. No harm done...
So this time, Do the same procedure, however this time do it to your Primary IDE Controller. I forgot about the CD Drives. I bet that you have the same IDE cord attached to both hard drives and then the other IDE cord must be attached to you CD Drives.

Hi Jason
I have tried this and it unfortunately did not work. I have an intel(r) 82801ba bus master ide controller which I am not sure about trying this with as well as the primary and secondary IDE channels. what do you think? I don't know if I disable the master the dratted thing won't boot up at all. It recognises both drives in the bit at the startup where you press del to enter - can you tell I don't really know what I am talking about? The drive in question is a Maxtor 6E040L0 and I have tried the same process you mentioned with the disk drive as well as the IDE controller with no success. Unfortunately, it does not show up in the disk management centre so I can't try Dave's suggestion, but thanks anyway. I very daringly opened up the side this afternoon and checked all the connections, which lost me the C drive for a while, but fortunately it worked in safe mode so I could do a system restore which brought it back. Ah well, another day wasted with the computer, just not surfing the net this time

Linda,
If BIOS is able to see the drive and Windows XP cannot, then it has to be a driver issue. You probably inadvertantly moved a required driver file when you moved files. So the solution would be to reinstall the driver. That's why I suggested doing the delete of the controllers and allowing Windows to reinstall the needed driver files (and to determine the appropriate drivers I need to know the specs of your system).
So, please post the specs of your system. If you are not sure, and easy way (and free) to get this info is to use a freeware utility called Belarc Advisor. It will scan your system and spit out the manufacturer of your Motherboard, Processor, Video Card, Disk Drives and other system specs.
Get it here:

A few other questions I thought of.
In your Device Manager, under "Disk Drives" Do you see both drives listed?
Double click on them and go to the Policies Tab. Each one should Be set to "Optimize for Performance" and the "Disk caching" should be check marked. like this:
Also, In your Device Manger, IDE Controllers, ...Double click on the Primary Controller. Then click on the Advanced Settings Tab. Yours should look like this:
You should have two Devices listed and they should both be set to DMA if Available and they should both have a Current Transfer Mode (it doesn't have to be Ultra DMA Mode 5...just as long as it says something with the words DMA Mode. If you see Not Applicable that is a problem, so let me know that).

Hiya
both devices are set to enable write caching, however the auto detection on device type 1 is greyed out. all other settings are as in the picture except DMA mode is 4. I have been at work all day so I have not downloaded the specs tool, but will do so tomorrow when the kids go to school.
I am also now having problems getting it to switch on. If I just start up normally, it sits on the windows bar for about 10 minutes then reboots just as it is about to go onto the blue page where the icons for people are. If I log on to safe mode first and restart it will then work fully, but still sits at the status bar for at least 10 minutes.
will update again tomorrow. thanks still for your help and thanks to my mother who pointed me at your site.

Linda,
Uh oh, That is not a good sign. Typically, it has been my experience, that when you start to experience a problem that is getting progressively worse, that eventually you end up with an unbootable (sometimes Unrecoverable) Operating System.
I strongly suggest that you take evasive action now, before it gets any worse.
Do you have your copy of Win XP? If so, I suggest that you run the Repair. If you need some guidance in this, please see the following article for a walk-through:

Do the repair, then post back to let us know how it went...

Probably not as it looks to be a low level problem here as it is recognised in the BIOS but not by windows. So it could be a windows driver problem. As it only recognises drive c: A possible solution would be to disconnect (physically ) the second unrecognised drive. Boot, turn off, then reconnect drive 2, reboot then see if windows finds it.

Unfortunately, I have tried unplugging the hard drive and it would not boot up at all. I possibly unplugged the wrong cable, however I am going to try and get someone to come and have a look at it for me tomorrow as I am fairly sure now it is something I will not be able to fix and my family are screaming because all the programs they use are on the F drive. I rang a computer shop today and they think the drive has failed
Thanks for all your help tough guys, you have been wonderful.

I saw this one coming....It is still possible to fix this, but you will need to find someone with a copy of Windows XP. You need the disk. If you can find that, and follow my suggestion, you still could fix and avoid paying tons of $$$$
