File transfers and cd/dvd read wite is slow after format and re install of XP

Hello,
I have recently carried out a hard drive format and reinstall of XP pro.
The previous format was FAT32, this time I set the format as NTFS.
While I have seen a performance improvement in the way programs pop up and run, any reading or writing of dvd files files between hard disc and dvd is about half the speed it was previously. An example would be burning a dvd with nero, the time to complete says 13 mins but runs for 30 min (before the reinstall it would do it in 13) File transfer between drives is not as quick either.
It also appears that reading from dvd to hard disc is a stop start affair (read a bit, write a bit) where before it was a continous action.
Can anyone offer some help?

I don't think it will be NTFS that's the problem, but it could be that you need to update the drivers for your DVD drive, or the software you are using to burn CD's.
A quick search for NTFS problems with speed seems to indicate that it's only with Linux that people experience problems.
The other possibility is the way you have connected the DVD drive to IDE. I'm not an expert on hardware in that area, but I seem to remember that you are best advised to connect DVD/CD drives to a different IDE from the hard drive(s).

I think that this is a NERO problem. Check in your NERO settings, and look for something that refers to the Temporary File directory. Part of what NERO does is cache all of the data prior to burning, so after awhile, these files build up and cause a slowdown.
The only other thing I can think of is that it could be that you don't have the drive set properly in your device manager. To fix this, open device manager (go to start, then control panel, then system, then click on the Hardware tab, then click on Device manager) then go to your IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, double click on your Secondary IDE Channel) then click on the ADVANCED SETTINGS tab and make sure that the device is set to Run in DMA mode.

Thanks, I appreciate the assist.
Firstly, Squeezebox, I agree with NTFS not being the problem, I am concerned about the DVD driver, I have a Pioneer DVR-107D and the date of the driver is 1/07/2001, Ver 5.1.2535.0, but XP updates doesn't detect any new ones. And my searches for updates have come up with nothing.
I am puzzled because, this same hardware was working ok before the format and XP reinstall.
The Nero 6 Ultra edition software is the same I used before.
With regards to the connections, I haven't touched or changed anything from what they were before, do I need to try something here?
To windowsxp550, I had a quick look at Nero, in config of Nero Express, there was a reference to a temp file directory but it was empty. I couldn't see anything else that appeared relevant, but then I'm no expert on most of this stuff.
Device manager shows transfer mode set to DMA if available on both device 0 and device 1. Current transfer mode is set to Ultra DMA mode 2.
I have tried removing the device and have windows find it again and reinstall the driver, still the same performance.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

A few more things to inspect...
Go into My Computer, Right Click on the DVD Drive and then select properties. Then click on the Recording Tab, then look at the "
Select a write speed... "
to see what speed it is set to.
If it already is set to "Fastest" Try changing that and selecting the highest speed from the drop down menu. So something like 16X or 8X (whatever the highest speed is).
The other factor to inspect, would be the media discs that you are using. Some discs have a speed limit on how fast they can be written. So even if your hardware is capable of burning faster, that the disc speed limit will limit the speed.

Sorry guys, its now fixed.
all this time ive been concentrating on the secondary IDE channel, turns out the primary IDE was on PIO, ive uninstalled the primary IDE and rebooted, primary is now at Ultra DMA mode and all is back to normal.
I am really grateful for your efforts.
Many thanks and all the best.

whoops that was my fault, I shouldn't have assumed it was on the Secondary IDE channel (most of the time it is, but not always).
Glad to hear your problem is fixed
