Hi,
Not my problem but a neighbour's, he hasn't used his laptop for some time and when he came to use it yesterday zilch, using the mains adaptor the disk light starts and then stops, no display whatsoever, he has tried taking out the battery leaving itfor a few minutes and then replacing it. after doing this on the first attempt to switch on slightly more disk activity but it gets no further.
Anyone out there with any ideas? It is an E machines laptop from Dixons.

Albie,

Have you tried in Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration?
What happens if you try going into BIOS setup?

If the screen refuses to display anything at all, it might be in need of a visit to a laptop repair shop!

Dave,
Nothing on screen at all, no bios, F8, F8, F2, Del all give zilch. Obviously the battery must have been flat on the first try but it's been charged, I tried with & without mains supply all to no avail. I wondered if there is a reset all button somewhere as I had on my old and much missed Sharp PC1251.

It sounds to me like your neighbor's battery went.   How long has he had the laptop?  I know that this isn't a dell, but If you look at Dell's website here is what they say about how long a laptop battery lasts:

"All rechargeable batteries wear out with time and usage. As time and cumulative use increase, the performance will degrade. For the typical user, noticeable reduction in run time generally will be observed after 18 to 24 months. For a power user, reduction in run time generally may be experienced prior to 18 months. "

So if your neighbor's laptop has been using that battery for more than 18-24 months, then that would be what it is.

I hate to put the mockers on this but are laptop batteries prone to leaking after a while like other batteries? If so there may be problems with the Motherboard.  Sorry

Thank you both, I did not see any sign of leakage when removing the battery and the battery does apear to be holding a charge. When operating on batterry alone although the disk light stops flashing indicating activity after a couple of seconds the battery indicator light and another light for the hard disk remain glowing. He was leaving the laptop on charge overnight to see if that has any effect glupek2 Here's hoping!

When a battery goes bad, it doesn't just switch from working perfectly to not working at all.  There is a slow progression.  The first sign is that it starts to not hold a charge for as long.    Then as it progresses it gets worse and worse, until finally it is unable to support  the machine.   So whether or not the light goes on, on the battery is not so relevant.   Please find out How old is the battery.  If the answer is anything greater than 2 years, than I really would bet that this is just a old battery that needs replacing.   Batteries don't last forever....

EDIT:  Also, what is the model number?  Did you say Sharp PC1251? I looked that up and I found that that is either a personal calculator, or a laptop that was made in 1983!

If this laptop was made in 1983, and this is the first battery for it, then it most definately is a battery that just needs replacing...

That is what I found from Google when I search for Sharp PC1251...
