I have ordered the beta of Vista (don't have a dvd burner) and when I get it up and running as a dual boot system I will post my observations in this thread on what programmes work and those that don't.  Plus anything else of interest about it

Essexboy,

I also downloaded Vista.  I am going to have to either spend a day burning files (to clear out my hard drive a bit), so that I can install or buy a new hard drive.

From what I have read, I am a bit reluctant to even want to put it on my current hard drive (even with it being partitioned), for fear that it will zonk my entire drive.    Reports are, that it is pretty buggy and it should not be put on a live machine.

Best bet is to install a second hard drive because as you have pointed out not to be used as a live program.

I think I might be able to get around that because my C partition is a lot smaller than recommended just 9GB, so I will install it on my terciary partition  which is 40GB and, with my drive image if it all goes to rats I will just reinstall my C drive wiping all Vista data (well thats the theory anyway)

OK first problem Vista doesn't recognize my USB modem and there are no Vista drivers.  Does not recognize my MB so unable to put USB drivers on.  After all this I found out that you can run programmes in an XPSP2 compatibility mode.  So I have restored yesterdays image (worked a treat) now I will reformat my G drive and start again this time running my MB and Modem discs in SP2 mode.  Plus this time I will do them in the right order.  Install of Vista took 45 minutes and the first few reboots were verrrrrrrry slow but after that they were about on par with XP.  The explorer function takes a bit of getting used to, and every time I instal a program it asks me if I really want to do it Duh!!!!!

Stay tuned for the next thrilling installment

I hope you are enjoying yourself Essexboy. The 'fun' you are getting is one reason why I don't have any of the MS beta products installed. I only have the one main working PC though (plus laptop) and I need them working all the time. Maybe if I had a spare machine for playing with ........

No problem for me as I have a spare partition and just before I instal I take a new drive image.  If it messes up then 10 minutes later I am back to as I was before.  I would rather learn the problems (and workarounds) with Vista now rather than try it as the only OS on a new system.   At the moment I am unable to find system restore, so I tried last known good which took me back to before I had fixed my internet snags, but it must be there somewhere, maybe I need a bigger shovel  cry2
