Hi there,
I got stuck with a problem I have never experienced before: When I start up Windows and the desktop appears, all icons + the Start menu are missing. Actually there is nothing on the sreen just the bare wallpaper so there is no way I could access anz of the programs / documents on the PC. Is there any way I could solve this problem? I've tried using the Windows Advanced Options Menu to boot from the Last Known Good Configuration, but this did not work. Thanks

This could be due to a corrupt user account, or possibly Windows in need of repair.

Have a look at this article first, it might give you the solution you need:

questions:
- pressing the winkey plus the r button can you open the runbox
(thinking of sfc/scannow)
- do you have a cd of XPhome handy
- if these two are out do you know how to repair will CD
- can you get into the comp via safemode
- can you still see the processes via tastmanager
- can you still use mscongif to disable startups.

Flea,

Please allow the originator to respond to the first possible solution before confusing the issue with questions that may be too technical.

Too right dave fleamailman  way is too confusing if and when we get to that bit we will walk him through it bit by bit.
Also he has even missed a space out on the scannow.
