I don't know if it's an XP problem or just my PC itself but it has got very, very slow, sometimes it won't close down, it takes forever to start up, often it freezes and all I can do is press the trip and go through the "your PC didn't shut down" procedure, and that takes about an hour on a good day.

I had a similar problem back in August and with the advice of "essexboy" the problem was fixed. After sorting it out I was advised to set up a "system restore" point, which I did, but now I am unable to restore to that point, or to any other point for that matter.

I don't know if it's coincidence but I have been having increasing problems since I installed Norton Anti Virus software, could that be causing the problem?

Any advice would be appreciated. yquestion

Possibly:

I am a lot more experienced now so if you wish HJT me again and we'll see if it is a software or hardware problem, initially it sounds like a conflict.  However if it is getting progressively worse it may be something deeper

Hi Adventure your log looks OK, so next stop is to look at your software and any that could be causing a hang.

Re-run HJT but when the programme opens select none of the above, then select config, then select misc tools.  At the top is a generate start up list option   check both boxes then select generate start up list

Post the result here and I'll have a look at that section

Again your startup looks OK although as to be expected there is shedloads of Symantec/Norton start up elements

Never having used Norton I dont know a great deal about it.  But I know that ZA usually hangs on shutdown and to get round that I use a small programme to ensure a fast shut down.  It's called tunexp from   http://www.driverheaven.net/dforce/default.php and when run under the memory drop down I select faster shutdown and accelerate dll unloading.  You could give it a try -  there is also a section for defrag boot files, and move boot files which I find speed up loading slightly.  In fact you can play with all sections as it is safe.

Are you dealing with the HJT logs via PM Essexboy? I would have liked to look too.

For what it's worth, Norton is notorious for slowing systems down, I got rid of mine a few years ago and now stick to NOD32 with Zone Alarm.

If you wish I can add them.  Which in a way I suppose would be quite  useful  for other forum members

Essexboy - The tunexp15.exe will not work on my PC. I just get "This is not a valid win32 application"
However I will keep trying.
It looks as though I had better remove this Norton anti virus (even though I paid good money for the damned thing just 3 months ago) and install ZA instead. Can it be downloaded or do I have to buy it in CD form?

install ZA instead. Can it be downloaded or do I have to buy it in CD form?

Here you go http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1001_cnet_zdnet/zlsSetup_65_737_000_en.exe

Essexboy - thanks for the ZA link.
Yesterday I uninstalled Norton Antivirus and although it took a very long time to do it, my PC is now back up to a reasonable speed. That obviously proves that Norton does slow PC's down!
Hopefully the free version of ZA that I have now installed will keep the bugs out.   hooray

No problems. However Norton has not gone it is worse than a virus to get rid of.  You need to use the symantec removal tool to ensure it has alll gone..  http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Don't forget you still need an AV

Hello again essexboy, Yes I had forgotten an AV, I thought ZA was that as well but I see it's just a firewall. What do you suggest that's compatible with ZA, if it needs to be compatible that is? Something that's downloadable and free would be nice.
Incidentally I have just checked my ZA and I feel as though I'm being got at! There have been 974 intrusions stopped, 138 have been high rated. Is this normal for 24 hours?
