Friends: I am running Windows XP Pro. I have 2 80 GB hard drives, one being used as a backup. My problem is that the second one would show up on boot-up sometimes as normal, and other times as Unknown, Not initialized, Unallocated. I re-installed it, Initialized and re-formatted it already, yet it keeps happening. Any ideas why this is happening?

It might be due to dodgy connections. Check that the ribbon cable to the drive is seated properly at both ends.

Changing the ribbon cable is another option to consider.

If the drive is a bit older, it's possible that the drive is failing. A replacement drive won't be too expensive.

Squeezebox: Thanks for your response. The drive is like new, only a few months old. I changed the IDE ribbon as you suggested, and it seems fine so far. Only time will tell. Thanks again for your help.
