Help!

I'm having a wierd downloading problem.

I have two computers sharing an internet connection.  #1 has no problem with any type of download.

#2 can't seem to get through more than ~1MB of downloading before it stalls.  This only happens with explorer (HTTP) downloads (i.e.  Skype file transfers and P2P aren't a problem).  If I leave the DL alone nothing will happen - it will just waits.  If I'm using Opera and I stop and start the DL, I can eventually get the whole file.  I just downloaded a new version of Google Earth and it's taken about 20 stop/starts.

I've been playing with this problem for months and can't seem to get it sorted out.

Any thoughts?
Ken.

(#2 computer is up to date with all windows updates)

Is this a shared wireless connection?  And is the computer you are having trouble with a Laptop?
If so, what are you using for a router?

Please post back your answers to the above questions

A few things come to mind,
If it is a Laptop and you are using a wireless router it could be the security settings for the router
It could be your Firewall (or the Windows Firewall)

Thanks for the quick response...

#1 = Laptop
#2 = Desktop

The internet sharing is done with a basic hub (Acerhub 590u).

#2 is using Windows firewall.  When I turn it off, things work much better.  I have IE and Opera in the exceptions list - but this doesn't seem to be enough.

What next?
:)

There is a knowledge base article covering IE problems with downloading files:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q306837

I don't know if this covers you having the same problem with Opera though.

Downloading large files problem is covered here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q298618

You could also look at this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q299328

Do you have GoZilla installed by any chance?

The Windows firewall isn't the best protection. I recommend using Zone Alarm, it is far better and gives protection on outward as well as inward bound traffic.

Get the free version here:

So this must be a Firewall configuration setting.

I agree, that the Windows Firewall is not the best.   But if you prefer it, then to fix this go into your Control Panel, then Windows Firewall.  Then  go to the Advanced Tab, then click on your connection and click Settings.

In there put a check mark under HTTP, HTTPS, POP3, SMTP, FTP

That should clear up your issue.
