Hi,
Have you got a router connected to the network card with an ethernet cable?
If not, how do you connect to the Internet?

You misunderstood. I meant on the desktop PC.
How are you trying to connect? If with the same router, is it connected via ethernet?

This started happening after I reinstalled windows XP. I had to reformat my hard drive as the PC was really slow. The desk top is connected to the cable modem via the router. It seems the router is working as my wireless laptop works but I don't have internet access on the desktop. The ipconfig/all did not reveal any ip address on my desktop

After you reinstalled XP, you would probably have had to reinstall the drivers for your network adapter. Have a look in Device Manager, see if the adapter is showing.
Do you have a disk, such as for the motherboard or the network card with the drivers on it?
