Not sure if I should ask business network question.  Please let me know moderator.

I have an HP 2065 printer installed on (through its NIC) my network.  Server is small business server 2003.  Workstations are XP (SP2).   I need to reinstall printer ever 2-3 days on these computers, because it goes away.  Printer has static IP address (so it’s not a re-map due to IP change).  Any advice on where to look for the issue or a fix to the issue?

I do have most recent drivers from HP installed.

I'm getting VERY tired of the issue (and the grumping from the ladies who use this printer).

Thanks.

Alas I am not on a network, but I feel this is a valid question for the forum, as home networking is now becoming more common.  I will see what I can find out but I am not network savvy

I have little experience on networks, nor am I on one. But, the HP printers often have networking built into them. Have you set it up using the HP software?

If you have, then maybe you coud try the other alternative and use XP printer sharing instead of the HP networking.

I have experience working with networks...

When you say you have the drivers installed, are you talking about on the server?    HP's, can get a bit picky when it comes to the drivers.  I know that at my workplace, our HP's require the driver to be installed on the workstations (whereas the other non-HP's, the windows drivers work just fine).   When you add the printer to the workstations make sure to manually set up the driver so it doesn't auto select one.

Checking on how I finally set it up.  HP lists 2003 server as a supported OS, but if I remember correctly the install CD had issues with the OS.  I did use CD on workstations and eventually installed on server (correctly I thought).  I'll check it out.

I also get myself confused some because I installed (the next day) a Brother MFC 7220 on the server via USB, and had some similar issues with the install.

I only recently became aware that HP was disappearing from the workstations it is supposed to be on.  I do not have the printer and am not allowed to have access.  Isn't business wonderful when "computer guy" doesn't have access to all the stuff he's supporting?

Sorry about post being in "wrong place".  I thought about putting it here but I wasn't sure if it was a network or printer issue...

HP's install CD reports unsupported operating system for the windows 2003 server.  Their website clearly states that this OS is supported.

I have duplexing enabled in printer preferences but, no workstation has the option to duplex (in finishing options).  This is starting to drive me MAD.... (er?).

I have downloaded newest drivers from HP and installed them.  No joy.  Any advice, opinions, or options from you Geniuses out there?  Anyone at all?

Bob

EPS the man you're in trouble opinions will be noted, but I will not see them as helpful.

Try contacting HP support Bob.

(Sorry, it's the best I can offer.)

Just got more info.  This is not a problem with printer disappearing every 2-3 days.  The duplexing option on this printer was only availible if the ladies used the printer as if it was connected from an XP machine, so they would uninstall the printer (the sever connection to them) and re-install as if the printer was controlled by another workstation.

The workstation they used is on from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, so when these ladies would log-in at 8:00 the printer would not be available (computer that connected it is off).  Thus the disappear re-appear issue...

HP Color LaserJet 2605dn_2605dtn PCL6 driver is the only one HP has that allows duplex printing with a windows 2003 server OS.  Now that I have that installed and running, the Ladies will not change the printer and will not lose it every 2-3 days.

I was hoping the days of too little information to solve a problem were over when I left phone tech support....
well at least now I can put my hands on the hardware and read error messages myself...

BTW MOD I had this in the right place... turned out to be a printer issue....

Well done and congratulations Bob, nice bit of detective work there.

You must be feeling quite pleased with yourself.
