Sound stopped on Laptop

Hi people,
I'm hoping someone can help, I'm a bit of a novice.
I've got a Sony Vaio laptop, PCG-GRT785B running win xp.
The sound was working fine until about a week ago, the error message that comes up is...
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly"
I clicked the more information tab and got this...
"C00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons"
This gave me the option to go to the Windows Update page to check for the latest drivers and also to Trouble shoot this in windows help.
Which I've done..with no joy.
It also gave me the following option..
To use a different sound device
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Devices tab.
Double-click Speakers, and in Audio device to use, click a different device.
Error ID = 0xC00D11BA, Condition ID = 0x00000000
But when I tried to do this I could not see the Device tab..I'm using Explorer 7.
SO I went to control panel, Sound & Audio Devices, under the volume tab it says.."No Audio Device" and all the other boxes below are in light grey and can not be accessed.
Oh also I'm running service pack 2.
Please let me know if you have any ideas..
Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for the link, I've also tried working through this but as I said above the options that I need to make any adjustments are all greyed out.
I'm using the laptops internal speakers.
HELP.

Could you download pcwizard (a diagnostic tool ) from here
http://www.cpuid.org/download/pcw2007_v172.exe
and run the programme. Select the multi media icon, and then select FILE > SAVE AS in the dialogue that comes up tick the detailed information and driver information. Post the data in your next reply

To me it looks like you are having a driver problem. Do you have your original cd for the laptop. If so then uninstall the soundcard from device manager. Then reboot and install the sound drivers that came with your cd or get the latest from here
