This might help Bob, although I've never tried it myself:
If the Windows installation files are in the directory c:windows\I386, you vcould try this: You'll need to download a ntfs boot disk from
http://www.ntfs.com/boot-disk.htm and make the bootable floppy or cd depending on what you have available.
You then need to boot from that disk depending on if its a floppy or cd you create you'll have to adjust the boot device order in the BIOS. If your not sure how to do this post back
Once you have booted from the boot disk at the prompt type
c: press enter
you should now be at the c: prompt
type cd windows press enter
type cd i386 press enter
type winnt.exe press enter
Windows setup should now start follow this guide
http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/repair_installation_xp/repair_installation_xp.html on how to repair the installation of xp. This will not wipe any of your files just repair the installation of xp you will have to download all of your updates again and install service pack 2 if neccessary but it should get your pc going again.
Once you have your pc running again this page
http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd#wxp describes how to make your own xp disc from the files on your computer.
