What error is reported by the BSOD?

Why can't you update to SP2? What happens?

Sounds like a problem that can be fixed with a slipstream of SP2 onto a new XP Install CD.

Could also be a driver issue for whatever network connection's on the net...  I confused myself there...
Try reinstalling the driver for the network card, Yeah that's it.

Without the BSOD error output, it's really hard to diagnose any other way, I just like to shoot blindly into the air.
