Here's a prob for Strum!

I have WinDVD as well as Media Player 10 installed on my 'puter.  It used to automatically open Win DVD whenever I inserted a DVD but now I get the option Window to "Open in Win DVD", "Open in WMP10", "Open Folder to Browse" etc.
Whether I select to open in WinDVD or MP10 it ALWAYS opens MP10!  I have the appropriate tick box deselected in MP10 (Tools -> Options -> File Types) although this always appears ticked again after playing a DVD.  I've also told the system to "Always use WinDVD" to open DVD files, but it doesn't seem to want to know!
It's a relatively minor annoyance as I can insert the DVD, cancel the dialogue window, then open WinDVD, but it'd be rather nice if I could get it behaving as it used to.
Suspect a registry edit may be in order, but not quite sure where to look.

Any ideas?

TIA

Jules

Not sure about windvd however lets make a stab at it.  Is there a tools drop down with a preferences section, if so does it have a section for file associations.  If not maybe a re-install of windvd over the top will reset the associations.  Or go to wmp10 select tools - select preferences - select file types and deselect references to dvd

Hi Essexboy, good to talk again,

I've tried the tools - preferences - deselect reference to DVD (as mentioned in my orogonal post) but this ALWAYS appears ticked again after I've played a DVD in WinDVD !!??!!
There are very few options in WinDVD and none which specify file types or making WinDVD the default player.
I'll have a check tomorrow to see if I have a WinDVD installation disc and try re-installing (it came pre-installed originally).

Cheers,

Changing the Autoplay behavior of a CD or DVD  drive

Normally, Windows prompts you to choose an action each time you insert a CD or DVD.
Your options might include displaying the contents of the CD in Windows Explorer, playing an audio CD or DVD in Windows Media Player or another application, or transferring digital photos to your My Pictures folder. The menu that appears when you insert a CD or DVD is dynamic, and its choices are determined  by the content on the disc and the applications installed on your computer. When you insert an audio CD, for instance, Windows offers you the choice of playing the CD with any of your installed media player programs that have registered themselves as being capable of playing music CDs. To change the default program for a particular type of content  and avoid seeing this dialog box in the future, follow these steps:

1 Open My Computer.

2 Right-click the icon for your CD or DVD drive, choose Properties, and then click the AutoPlay tab.

3 In the list at the top of the dialog box shown below select a disc type.( In the figure, we've selected Music CD. Other options include Pictures, Video Files, Mixed Content, and DVD movie)

You can specify the action you want Windows to take when you insert particular kinds of discs into your CD or DVD drive.

4 In the Actions section of the dialog box,  select the action that you want Windows to take when you insert a disc of the selected content type. ( If you want to preserve your options every time you insert a particular type of disc, select Prompt Me Each Time Tp Choose An Action).

5 Click OK.

Thanks for that Don, but my problem is that even if I click on the "other application" (WinDVD in this case) it's still WMP10 that opens.
I think I'm slowly but surely tracking the problem down by a slow, laborious process of elimination.  Once I've hacked it I'll post what I did for the benefit of others who may come across the problem.  I've now got WinDVD opening by default - just have to track down why it wasn't working before.

Cheers,

Thanks Essexboy.  I'd tried that and sure enough WinDVD would open.  But the next time I inserted a DVD I'd be back to square one!

I've now sussed it by trial and error.  I've found that in WMP10, in Tools -> Options -> File Types, the "DVD Video" check box will ONLY remain unchecked if the "Microsoft Recorded TV show" box is ALSO unchecked.
With both these boxes unchecked WinDVD can be selected as the default player for DVDs and will automatically open accordingly upon insertion of a DVD.

Seems like MP10 overrides all other settings if BOTH these boxes are left unchecked.     I hope someone else may be able to gain from this at some time.

Thanks for all suggestions!
