Squeezebox or Essexboy, hook me up.

So a long time ago, I downloaded the Beta of IE7 and it worked great aside from the easy exploits that Microsoft should have seen before releasing to beta...  But I digress, I am now at the release of IE7 and when I middle-click on links I get an empty page [in a new tab] that I have to copy the link and paste into the address bar.  What am I doing wrong?

I have uninstalled, reinstalled and tried re-registering all associated dlls.  I have "Reset web settings"  I have googled this problem and apparently I am the only one having it...  Damn Dell machines.  Any help would be appreciated on the topic.

Hi John,

I haven't gone off looking for the problem on Google as you have already done that. It also seems you have tried just about everything with IE7.

So I am thinking it's your mouse!  You said you 'middle' click, so  assume you mean the wheel button. What have you got that programmed to do? Mine is set to double click and I'd either use left-click on a link or right-click and choose an option from the menu such as 'open in new tab'.

Ctrl+T is the keyboard command for a new tab and would open a tab in IE7 with the address about:Tabs. This includes a message that tells the user that they've opened a new tab. The alternative is that the new tab has opened in just a blank page with the address about:blank.

If the middle button settings have become corrupted or you have it set to some particular command that isn't right for links, this could be the cause of the problem.
Check your mouse settings........

Thanks for the quick reply, I have checked the mouse settings.  I have reset the IE7 settings on my laptop [HP] and on my Desktop [Dell], my laptop recognizes the mousewheel as middle click and opens links in a new tab, just like Firefox.  The Desktop, however, is opening up a new tab with the middle-click (Mousewheel) but it's a blank address bar...  I still have to copy the link over to that tab and paste into the address bar.  And Ctrl-T Left Mouse click does the exact same thing, but no data in the new tab!!!  AAARRGGGGHHH!!!

I thought this would be an easy one for ya, what do I win for stumping yquestion the Davester?

I'm not in any real rush to fix the issue, as I, myself, use Firefox like a good little sheep.  I just thought that with all that I've tried, this would be a good question to ask on the forum...  Got anything for me to try Essexboy?

OK, this is what I've found out:

IE7 tabs don't work very well, the options to open a new tab in anything other than a blank tab don't do the business for all users (including me). There are several requests for help on this subject and the problem persists even after settings have been adjusted.

I have also experimented with mouse settings and I cannot find an option that will make IE7 open a new tab with middle click, not even in the advanced 'program specific' settings for IE.

Basically, it seems that the middle click result on your lap-top isn't the norm, or you are just lucky on that.

The general advice is to use right-click on a link and choose 'open in new tab'.

You could also consider using Firefox or Opera. Opera does best in tabs, the majority of links will open in a new tab. Firefox doesn't always manage to do that.

I ditched IE7 as my main browser almost as soon as I installed it because it was soon apparent that the functionality was flawed, Opera leaves it in the shade for tabbed browsing.

Maybe the real question here is 'how come your mouse middle-click on your lap-top opens a new tab?'

If you want to review IE7 settings and see if you can get it to perform the same on your desktop, have a look here:

(I've already done this, and it didn't resolve anything, although I didn't reboot so try that after tweaking.)

We're not worthy, we're not worthy!

Thanks for the info, will give it a try after I get back from work.  Outstanding research, BTW.

It was the sense of humour that I liked, but worship is fine. For real praise - send money.

Gotta have money to send it, but if I catch a windfall, I'm definitely sending some your way.  I've used more info from this site than I can remember.  It's a site that I would consider worthwhile to support.  I have a morbid sense of humor that most people find disturbing.  I'm a big fan of Monty Python, Are you being served and most British "humour" as well.

Nice pic BTW.

If you like British humour, try a few Tommy Cooper one liners:

"Cos it's strange, isn't it.  You stand in the middle of a library and   go 'Aaaaaaagghhhh!' and everyone just stares at you. But you do the  same thing on an aeroplane, and everyone joins in.

"He said 'I'm going to chop off the bottom of one of your trouser legs  and put it in a library.' I thought "That's a turn-up for the books."

"And the back of his anorak was leaping up and down, and people were  chucking money to him. I said 'Do you earn a living doing that?'   He said 'Yes, this is my livelihood.'

"So I was getting into my car, and this bloke says to me "Can you give  me a lift?"  I said "Sure, you look great, the world's your oyster, go  for it.'"

"You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They  left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine.' So that  was nice."

"So I went down my local ice-cream shop, and said 'I want to buy an  ice-cream'. He said Hundreds & thousands?' I said 'We'll start with  one.' He said 'Knickerbocker glory?' I said 'I do get a certain amount of freedom in these trousers, yes.'

I went to Millets and said 'I want to buy a tent.' He said 'To camp?',  I said [butchly] 'Sorry, I want to buy a tent.'  I said 'I also want  to buy a caravan.' He said 'Camper?' I said [camply] 'Make your mind  up.'

I copied each of those quotes to a notepad to pop-up when I login to my machine.

Thanks
