tracking internet connections
«
on:

I was wondering if there is an application I can use to track internet connections as they happen? I have always been curious about all those automatic connections that XP makes when I log on and all the other apps that are trying to make connections as well. I tried Who Is but it seems to only identify the local server. I can block them with my firewall but I know that some are connections for auto update etc. Call me paranoid or just curious

I don't know of any application that would do this Richard.
If anyone is likely to know, it's Essexboy - but I don't hold out much hope.
I would use Task Manager to identify all running processes and applications (programs) then make sure I don't have anything phoning home unless I want it to.
Your firewall should block anything that doesn't have permission too.

What you want is a packet sniffer and there are plenty available This one has just about every network tool you will ever need

And another bit smaller this one

I need some teaching here Essexboy. How does a packet sniffer let you know what application is trying to connect to the internet from your PC?
Assuming there is no network adapter?

The packet snifffer will let you know where the packet is going and then from the timestamo and your firewall log you can tie the two together (never used it myself) It is used quite a lot by malware researchers to find out where the trojan goes and what it downloads

Good find on the Net-Tools Essexboy... Adding that one to my toolbox for later. I usually just use Ethereal, Wireshark now, for all my "Promiscuous sniffing".
Squeezebox, As for the idea of sniffing without a network adapter, install VMWare Server (FREE) onto your machine and create a Virtual Machine with Windows XP on it. Setup Wireshark or one of the aforementioned packet analyzers to sniff only packets to or from the interfaces setup for VMWare. That's how I test applications for safety on my home network... I'm just paranoid though, but at least I know it!!!
Good luck with the packet tracing Richard.
