Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my computer.  I took the video card and memory out of my computer and put it in my father in laws to test his machine, and erver since I reinstalled it into my computer it takes forever for the computer to do anything.  It boots through the bios just as quick as ever but when windows starts to load windows it takes forever.  The computer is reading the memory and the video card correctly.  I have reinstalled the XP and It did not seem to help.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Although you say that the memory is being read correctly, I would suspect that it is the cause of the problem. You might have not seated it properly, or put it in the wrong slots. Even worse, it might be damaged following its day out on a visit.

Try running a memory tester, Memtest86 can still be downloaded for free:

I ran mem test through 2 cycles (5hrs) and it did not find any errors.  I will contintue to run it for at least the same amount of time.  If you have any other suggestions, I will try anything.

thanks again

It doesn't appear to be memory then.

Because you also disturbed the video card, then maybe that's the next thing to look at. Could you try another graphics card?

When you reinstalled Windows, was that a format and clean install, or just a repair?

That didn't work either.  I even tried the vid card in my old computer to be sure, works fine.  Might just have to switch to the old machine.

thanks again

a friend of mine lent me some of his programs,  tufftest, checkit pro and pc diagnostics.  They all show errors or get hung up on the extended memory test.  What do you make of this.......

Looks like a memory problem, despite Memtest no showing any errors.
