Hi Rex,

Does the PC start OK after Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart?

If you are getting disc read errors, then it might be time to think about a new hard drive. Things you could do for the time being are:

Assuming you can get it running after a restart:

1. Disc Cleanup - get rid of temporary files.

2. Defragment the hard drive.

If you are still getting problems:

3. Try a repair install of XP - just in case there's any corrupted system files.

I wouldn't trust the hard drive after errors are being reported and I'd go for a new drive. You could clone the old one to save any problems with reinstalling Windows and programs etc.

You could also try a complete reformat of the existing drive and a clean install of Windows. Don't forget to back up data etc. It's also a good idea to use the Files & Settings Transfer Wizard prior to changing or reformatting a drive - it can save a lot of time and effort when the new is up and running.

hi,
thanks for the reply....but you know what i have already replaced the hard drive
it was a seagate hard drive and i have ordered a replacement and it is on it's way but in the mean time
i purchased a new Hitachi hard drive and reinstalled a fresh copy of xp.
but you know what it works for two days and again the same thing happens, that same error again
and after i restart it is the same.
i i tried several things and the only way i can start is by doing a reseat of the hard drive
and that will be to disconnect the cables from the hard drive and connect it back.....
and in that process i have to leave the hard drive out and some times it works fine for tow days after i reinstall the operating system

In that case, it could be either the cable to the HDD or the motherboard seating.
You could check the soldered joints under the IDE slot.

Could even be the power unit, or power feed to the HDD.

It definitely seems like a hardware problem, not an XP one.
