help, windows XP

Hi, wondering if someone could help me.
On starting the computer, with windows XP, it goes through the set up process and then straight to a blue screen saying that the computer is shut down to protect it from a problem.
I've tried going through F8 to get to last known configuration but I still end up at the same blue screen, same writing, through F12 the same thing happens. I can't seem to go any further.
???
Thanks

First thing to do is stop it from shutting down on failure, Then you should get a blue screen with errors givng a clue towards what is happening. You can then post details of the error message.
Start in Safe Mode and then right-click My Computer and select 'Properties'.
Click on Hardware then under the 'Startup & Recovery' click on 'Settings' and take the tick put of the box to 'Shutdown' on system failure. 'OK' to complete.
Now restart and you should get a a full BSOD with details of where/what caused the shutdown.
Post details back here.

Not trying to undermine anyone, but if F8 doesn't bring up the option to log into safe mode, then it will be mighty difficult to get into safe mode.
Do you have an XP C.D.?
If so, personally I would boot to the XP C.D., then go into the recovery console. Once in the recovery console, enter fixboot (replaces boot sector), and/or enter fixmbr (replaces master boot record). Reboot.
If that doesn't work, you could try a repair install of XP.
Hope this helps.

Good suggestions, and would be the next stage if necessary. I have assumed that the option to start in Safe Mode is working because last known good configuration is.
The BSOD message may indicate a hardware issue though.
If all else fails, then using the XP Cd will be the route to go.
