Description

Lets a user at a remote computer modify the registry on your computer. This feature is typically used only in large organizations and represents a security risk if not carefully configured.


Recommended Startup Type

Automatic if your network uses this feature; Disabled on all other computers.

Description

Poorly documented service used primarily to manage " jukebox "-style tape backup devices; rarely used on workstations.

Manual: may safely be set to Disabled on computers where no removable storage is available.

Provides support for LAN-based routing, specifically incoming dial-up and VPN connections.

Description

The Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP) provides a mechanism for UPnP devices to announce their presence on the network so that other computers can "discover" them. In late 2001, a buffer overflow vulnerability was patched in this service (Microsoft Security Bulletin MS01-059). Windows Firewall depends on UPnP to provide incoming connections to systems behind the firewall. If SSDP  is disabled, you can't use Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance to access systems across the internet.
