Jason, Don, Daisy,

This is just a suggestion - but if you think it's good .....

You want to see more tech support requests on here? So why not make the support panel top of the home page rather than the chat section. At the moment, the focus is on chat and banter - which has been a real laugh. But, if the chat was down the bottom of the opening page, then maybe it might shift the focus?

SQ,

I have been working hard at keeping the board fun for everyone by installing various mods etc.  My shift in the next week will be towards the main site.  There are some big changes coming up (all good).  I am going to be paying a professional to port the site over to a CMS (Content Management System) which will make the site Dynamic (as opposed to static).

Plus I am having a web designer redo the "look" ...and I made sure that it is custom and that the design is edgy, fresh, cool look to it.   Anything that looks same old same old will be rejected....

So, you guys can look forward to some major site enhancements.  It will probably occur in about a week and a half.

It actually isn't...lost my job of five years back in March 2005.  Been working a part time job since and been barely scraping by.  I do have a small amt of credits that were purchased a long time ago avail on a website where you can post projects and have people make offers. It's not exactly Money per se, because I can't withdrawl from it...but I can pay whoever does the project (and they are allowed to withdrawl it as cash..).

Just thought I would mention it

I would be happy to do this Jason but I don't see any adverts.  Are they stopped by my pop up blocker?

Forget that, I just realised they're on the main page, and I usually enter the site at 'forums'

Jason, somebody else pointed this out also. Not letting people in unless they register is a bad policy I think and just from experience, I may look for a problem to solve with google and most of them point to a forum somewhere where you can only see the solution by registering. I ALWAYS just close the page and keep on googling so that way you may be losing potential newcomers by essentially barring them. If they can see the problem or whatever and like the site then they may register. Ye with me? Its like looking in a shop window, you like something but the shop is closed, so you go to the next one open...

I agree with that Strum, I like to have a look through any forum before joining,  same as browsing through a few shops before deciding which to buy at.  I do think that registration should be necessary before being allowed to post though, I was surprised that someone logged on as a guest was allowed to post

fudgem, yes the guest thing, you're right there, spam etc...
I don't want to have to register with every site just to read a post, like I said I go away instead.

No doubt we can leave it in Jasons capable hands!

Jason,

Add my voice to the protest. You definitely need to keep the shop window open for all to see.

I have clicked on every advertising link - so funds will have increased already. I'll do it regularly.

Now, what I'd like to know  is, how much to buy your book and get it shipped to the UK?  If I like it, maybe I could become a bit of an agent for you and sell it to my customers (I teach &  give PC support).

SQ,

Currently the book is only avail as electronic download.  I could get it published into a binded book, but going that route is a whole other ball of wax (more complicated as you have to get a publisher involved, who will want royalties).

Anyhow, I have sold about 100 copies @ $29.99.  Just a week ago, I dropped the price to $19.99 and I revised the book (Revision 6).  The targeted audience, really are the computer iliterate.  Sure there are tons of sites that have xp tweaks and tips for free....but not very many of them actually walk you through screen by screen what to do.  There are a lot of people who just need that extra guideance (probably not any of the current members to this forum...but we are the experts...pretty soon, we should be seeing some more  of my targeted audience in here...I'm working on that now).  In addition there have been a few tweaks and tricks that I have discovered or written (most of the ones I'm referring to are Batch files that do handy things..) .

On the subject of allowing Guests to View The forum.  I have been actively testing the various permission settings to see the effect.  IF you guys recall about a week ago (when that feature was avail), we seemed to be stuck at 79 members.  We were stuck at 79 for a LONG time....we only started gaining members when I changed the permission settings to their current state.  So I really disagree with the notion that this will deter new members...because in the past week it seems to have been working (we are up to 89 now...and people are joining each day again...).

Personally I prefer to have the permissions set the way you guys are suggesting, Since Gaining Members is the #1 priority, I have to leave it set in a manner that is working.

I think once we get up to 500 or 1000 members that the Snowball effect will kick in so then I can relax about this setting.  But at the moment, every member counts and this setting seemed to jump start members joining again.  I think if I hadn't done this, that we'd probably be at 79 members still....
