I tried a "system restore" several times to several different retore points over the past week...Each time the computer responds as normal like the system restore is working, but after it reboots, it reads that "no changes were made to the computer."
As a test today...I just tried a restore for a date a week ago after I installed Sevice Pack 3......I received the same message.
I figure that if I can't restore after a major change like SP3, something must be wrong with my application. But I'm a novice.
Any ideas?
Thank you very much.

There's two things you can try. First is try a restore from Safe Mode.

The other is a repair process:

You can reinstall System Restore with these steps:

1. Click Start, Run, In the Run box, type  C:\windows\inf press enter.

2. Look for SR.INF (click on the column 'Name' to sort by name) and right-click on it,  select "Install" from the menu.

Follow the prompts, reboot and System Restore will be ready to use.

I have no "sr.INF"...but I do see an "sr" and an "sr.PNF".
The sr does have an "install" option, but the "sr.PNF" does not have that option when I right click.
Do I use the sr?
Thank you very much for your help!

Go into Control Panel/Folder Options (in classic view).

Then click on the View tab - and remove the tick from the box to 'hide known file extensions'.

You should now be able to see the inf files - and it probably is the one you see as simply 'SR'.

Thanks again...
But when I did that and clicked install, I received a box that told me " The file 'srs.sys' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD is needed.
I'm also given an opportunity to browse for it...and there are three in different locations.

I may give up on this.  the whole reason I want to restore is because the computer often won't let me switch users even after making sure that this is enabled in the Users options.  I'm concerned that if I continue with my system set up as is, I may have a real problem down the road and will not be able to restore.  Right now, I can recover without too much effort if I was ensured that System Revovery will give me back everything I messed up.
Is there a major downside of doing a system "recovery" other than losing what I've done so far?...but I can back a lot of that up first.
Thank you VERY much for working with me!

I wasn't able to come with an answer regarding sr.sys.

One last thing to check - right-click on My Computer, Properties, System Restore.

Make sure you don't have system restore disabled on the C drive.
Also - check the settings for SR, have you allowed Windows enough space for SR?

Is your hard drive getting full?  If there's not enough disk space, SR cannot work.

Do you need to have a disk cleanup? The simplest temp file tool is ATF cleaner, it will remove files safely and clear disk space for you. Doesn't need to be installed.

If you don't have either the SP2 CD or full copy of XP (SP2) on CD, then you will need to create one. Full details of slipstreaming a CD are here:
