I have a problem trying to install anything.  I always get this window:

Windows Installer
the feature you are tryingto use is on a network resource that is unavailable.  Click OK or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package W[11SP1DWPPP.msp in the box below.
User source: C:\DOCUME~1\VORAL123\LOCALS~1\Temp\{54F90B55-BEB3-4F0D-8802-228822FA5921}_7582\

Another window says, "This installation source for this sproduct is not available.  Verify that the source exists and that you can access it."

I have been trying a varity of things and got an error 1211 message one time.  Does anyone recognize this problem?

I reloaded Installshield.  I want to try reloading Windows Installer but not the whole OS.  Is there a way to reload just Windows Installer?

Also I am getting suspicious I caught a virus.

Hi VORAL,

This problems seems similar to the other problem you were having.   Were you successful solving this problem?
http://www.fixmyxp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=369&highlight=

If so, they I would suggest the same thing with this error.  There is something in your temp files that seems to be conflicting (after you did system restore).  Those files are temporary files and can be removed from your system.

For the Virus Scan, try this:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

It's a free online scanner, from Trend Micro, it will scan your pc for viruses.

Yest it is the same problem and worse than I thought.

Right after I entered my quiery it occured to me to try a search for fix installer xp.  I found Windows Installer 3.1. So I tried that with still no
success I had a false feeling of success when the program asked to update a file and installed successfuly.  But I had the same problem when I tried to install a game.

The virus scan TrendMicro did not turn up any viruses or worms.

I did further looking around and found that the number that is supposed to be in the temp file, which is empty, is located in Local Settings. {54F90B55-BEB3-4F0D-8802-228822FA5921}_7582\.  That number is the same number in the game disc file: Type Configuration Settings\Product Code but without _7582\

Is there some way I can find out more about how Windows Installer is supposed to work to find out why mine doesn't?

My word processor is operating faulty.  My disc drive does not reconnize a new disc until I restart the PC.  Also, the Recycle Bin was not eliminating deleted files.  They are turned into unknown or hidden files and supposed to be eliminated  after a certain build up.  I found the cure where someone had the same problem in a form and someone else had the solution (Replace a missing instruction in a file.)   With several problems occuring like that, I suspect something in common with them.
I must have cause some cruption in my hard disk.

As far as the Windows Installer is concerned.  If it is missing or not installed properly, Windows Update should detect that and reinstall (Have you gone to windows update yet?)

Also, try reinstalling your system drivers (the ones that came with your pc).

If those don't work, then I would suggest Repairing your Installation by doing a repair install.

Here are instructions on how to do a repair install:

I would like to report my success on correcting a problem I had with installing programs and getting this error message:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation paccage.
'WP11SP1DWPPP.msp' in the box below.
C:\DOCUME~1\VORAL123\LOCALS~1\Temp\{54F90B55-BEB3-4F0D-8802-228822FA5921}_7582\

I went on a solid three day bing pursuing any leads I could think of. I went hither and yan. I'll spare the details only to say it was a odyssey on the internet.  Many false leads while learning about what is out there. I even did a repair install and all that involves.

Just this morning of the 4th day I got up and decided to take a fresh look at the problem.  I then did what I could have done in the first place.  I did a search for network+resource windows+installer.  The led to a software maker that had the same problem that gave advice to its customers.  It refered to an  article from support.microsoft.com giving the solution.

It turned out I most likely deleted an installation registry file by using a register cleaner.  I have several and I don't know which did it.  It was not till much later that I recognized the problem and too late to try restoring the backup register files.  The article I found described a program titled Q238413 Windows Installer CleanUp Utility at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

It's a good thing I am retired and live alone.  I could devote a full three days to hunting down a simple solution to an agravating problem.  But I feel for those who have to work for a living and have little time for such things.  Getting technical help is dubious at best and can be costly.

Well now I feel better and can take a break and return to a better runing system to catch up on my things of interest.
