I notice you have 512k comme moi !!  Do you use any of the messenger site, MSN, Yahoo, Skype to speak to people through a microphone with web cam...I was wondering if my inability to get sound is because I haven't enough broadband speed ?  My webcam works FINE,  but I can't hear people and they can't hear me when I use the microphone, although I do all the pre-tests and everything works ...can you throw any light on this please ? But seriously, do you use a separate mic or a built in one? And have you checked  in the "volume control" applet that nothing important is muted?

A headset is supposed to be best with laptops.
