I just did it again, and for me, it locks the computer, It says the

"The computer is in Use and has been locked."  Then it has a username and password box to log back in...

maybe it does matter if you have a UK version or a US version....I am using Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, US version

More likely it depends on you having a password to log in. That would work as anticipated then.

That would work as anticipated by jason. MS on the other hand say it (Windows+L) locks the keyboard (which it doesn't).

Did anyone check that MS link I gave.

EDIT: Perhaps it's because I don't have a "Microsoft natural keyboard ". I wouldn't have thought it to matter which keyboard you use though.

I bet there is an obvious answer to this somewhere. What I mean by that is an answer to why MS say Windows+L locks the keyboard when it doesn't.

If you look on the MS link, it sead "Windows Logo+ L (Lock the keyboard)". However, that is sead under "Microsoft natural keyboard shortcuts".

Do you think these only work with a "Microsoft natural keyboard" and proper drivers installed?

Instead of calling it Lock the Keyboard, I should change it to lock the workstation?

Maybe it does require that you have a password set.  I'll try to remove the password and see what it does when I hit windows + L.

You already call it "Lock Computer", though. It's just MS that call it Lock the Keyboard.

That is where my initial confusion came from. Although what is still confusing is that you seem to be right, and MS seem to be wrong.

Here is another MS link on the matter:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126449/

In that link-- Windows Logo+L comes under a different category. This time it's under "Microsoft Natural Keyboard with IntelliType software installed". Note: this a separate category from "Microsoft Natural Keyboard keys".

That link sez "Windows Logo+L: Log off Windows".

Take ya pick..lol

EDIT: I'm talking crap. That link is for Win9x/Me.

Right, I think my side of this thread is pretty incoherent. So I'll just recap my side of this:

The other day I was at the MS keyboard shortcuts page when I noticed the "Windows Logo+ L (Lock the keyboard)" thing. I tried that and found it logged me off and in fact the keyboard was still usable.

Then I saw Jason had put what I thought to be the same list on the main page. But, as it turns out, Jason's list suggests Windows Logo+ L is for: "Lock Computer". Which sounds more like what happens when I press Windows Logo+ L.

So my question is, and has been for a while, does anyone know why MS say "Windows Logo+ L (Lock the keyboard)". Yet when I and seemingly everyone else on here press Windows Logo+ L, it actually locks the computer. And if you notice the keyboard is still usable (for navigation and such).

Somehow I don't think having a password (or not) would would make a keyboard shortcut lock the computer instead of lock the keyboard as MS suggest it would.

It would be a pretty dumb facility to lock the keyboard. How would you wake it up again????

So, I reckon that the MS page is incorrect. That's my theory, I'm sticking to it.

I can finally clear this up. The MS link I gave is indeed incorrect.

What the Windows logo+L shortcut does, depends on if your computer is part of a domain, or not. But in either case the "Lock Keyboard" description given by MS is still incorrect.

Here is a screen shot of "Help and Support Center" that is packaged with XP:

Additional info:
If you have a password or not only changes the fact that a user must enter the password to log back into that account after using the Windows logo+L shortcut. It does not effect the behaviour of the shortcut itself.
