What's happening? Try to upload small GIF file - smaller than the maximum allowed and I get this terrifying string of messages:
Warning: copy(./images/avatars/155201677043e943a725f8d.gif): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/fixmyxp/public_html/forums/includes/usercp_avatar.php on line 292

Have you got the avatar on your own PC? If so, use the 'Upload Image' link that is immediately below the posting window. A new window will appear, you just choose the location of the file, then upload it.
If the image is hosted elsewhere, let me know the full URL and I'll investigate for you.

Thanks Squeezebox, the image is on my PC. I found another post which mentioned clearing the cache first. Haven't had time to look at that.
I intended to have a try at uploading it from my website instead.

Uploaded it from my website and appears to have been a success.

That's the same warning message I got when I tried to load my avatar.
Use image shack and the "upload avatar from url" option. Paste from imageshack the first url (you are given a few to choose from after uploading the image) into the link in your profile.
Hope I've explained properly :S
