Looking for some advice guys.  I have an elderly neighbour who is wanting to buy her first Pc. She intends to have NTL 1 mb broadband installed and would be using the machine for surfing, storing her pix, email and printing out stuff. It does not have to be very fast and she has a budget of £500 but this ideally would include the price of a reasonable printer. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks, Gordon

Probably the best bet is to use an online computer manufacturer so that you can define the system that you want, with regards to parts, and the added bonus of an XP disc without all the garbage put on the system by the high street systems or Dell.  This is wher I got my current system from http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/.  Here is an example page of how to define your system mix and match and it will price it for you.   http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/systems.aspx?sysid=3# most other retailers use a similar system

Although I suspect you might find it difficult to get everything you want for £500. Prices seem to have gone up a bit recently. Last year, Evesham were very good on prices, I got my daughter a PC plus printer (from Argos) for just over £400. Looking at the the Evesham site now (www.lowestontheweb.com) and there doesn't seem to be any good deals on offer.

As an example I have just made  on that site an AMD64 sempron 512Mb ram 15" TFT 80Gb HDD CDRW drive Epson colour printer No Modem(you said DSL) 128Mb integrated video Integrated 5.1 sound Keyboard mouse and speakers 4 usb floppy and case for £451 including vat Av and Firewall for free from the net.  WinXP home included
