Tried it on an install didn't like it it as it reminded me of the old dos days lots of command line instructions even to install a simple adsl modem.  So I took it of and made an error somewhere and lost my MBR which was unrecoverable, so format re-install.  However, others think it is the best thing since sliced bread.  But the current status is that Linux is roughly in the win 3.1 stage nearly.  If you want to try it though I would initialy recommend a live install disc where it will run from cd, putting nothing on your system.  I got a copy from the Linux magazine they usually have one as a cover disc..

so many people are not sure of the linux os
but there a lot of good distros out there
and many easy to set up and use.

get a live cd and give it a go this will run a bit slower as your running it from ram

but you  can gat the feel of it

I've had a bash with a distro called 'Ubuntu'. It was pretty good, a lot better than I thought it would be anyway.

Hi Web Warriors-New member here. I see this thread is a week old so I'm not sure if it's worth posting or not in this particular forum.

I'm using Xandros 3.0 standard with the Konqueror web browser at this moment. You can try the OCE version (open circulation edition) and if you like it this 3.0 standard is available for $39.00 currently. 4.0 is due out this summer. Xandros designed this distro specifically  for Windows users and it is a superior product.  I could go on but for REAL information check http://xandros.com ->support->forums and you can go from there.

I am not a Linux apologist or cult fanatic. Along with this Linux system I have 2 XP systems LAN networked which I use all the time. I like XP which makes me a borderline heretic in the Linux forums. Flamers who think anyone using  "Windoze"/Winblows" etc is a retard or Borg drone of the Evil Empire.  When I point out that the BGFG syndrome (by geeks for geeks) that infects most of the Linux world will guarantee that Linux will NEVER challenge MS for the desktop market I just get dismissed as ...not a true believer. And what's the problem? It's so easy blah blah. Just cancel all appointments, disconnect your phone and spend the next 3 months studying the Linux Cookbook and other sources and presto!! You can multi-boot 20 distros and play with your computer all day.

So this OS agnostic recommends Xandros 3.0 which I actually use a lot especially for web browsing (security) plus it instantly networks with XP units. Good luck.

hiya subgeniusd
welcome to the forum hope you like it here

ihave used xandros 302 oce    ( free download)

i find it easy to use some good applications on there

easy to install  click and go nearly

linux does take a bit of getting used to but some of the new distros are starting to make it as easy to use for the end user as windows is

alot of the linux distros will now load all hardware and can be very easy to use once you get used to it

saying that my main pc is running xp
then i have two test pc's
one duel booting win 98 and suse 9.1
and one is just for testing new distros

but as you say it does take time to learn linux and the different deskstops gnome or kde

it it worth giving linux a try

and i am no expert on linux i have to say

more linux info

if anyone out there wants to try it.............

ok the easiest way to try linux is by using a LIVE CD
you just pop it in to your cd drive and boot from it runs a little slower than if it was on the hard drive but you can see if it works on your pc and if you like it

heres a link where you can get live cds from

http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php

ok if you like what you see you can get installable distros here

I think there is a new SUSE just out.

Separate machine for testing new distros....what a great idea. When I thnk of all the noob posts begging for help with their failed dual boot...

Great links. Check the current Tuxmag #14. It has an extended article reviewing Xandros 3.0.

Well I'm off into the warm Atlanta night but  shall return in a day or two.  VCP dude  (very cool profile)

hi bud

i think the new suse is ver 10

very good disro one of the best for newbies to try

if you havent got a test pc you could try a hard drive caddy

i find it usefull just chuck a spare hard drive in, then load  the distro of your choice.

another distro i like is  mempis.

this link is for screen shots of linux distros

http://shots.osdir.com/

hope its of some use to any one wanting to give linux a try
