Microsoft has just released a beta desktop

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=971793F2-95AC-4788-8006-92D848E67A40&displaylang=en

Windows Desktop Search 2.6.5 beta (KB911993)
Windows Desktop Search (WDS) helps you find virtually anything on your PC or your networked drives including e-mail messages, calendar appointments, documents, and more.

Have downloaded it and at the moment running well.
It does create a restore point before it uninstalls the msn desktop.

Also I am finding it loads quicker than msn

Alternatively - I found Copernic Desktop Search tp be far superior to MSN Desktop or Google Desktop.

http://www.copernic.com/

Has a smaller footprint too.

Give Google some time, they are the pioneers of Internet searching.  Desktop searching is about 226 steps backward for them.  But with all the new developers they hire yearly, Google will have their own OS before you know it.
