encryption?

I've just managed to set up a wireless network connection so I can use my new notebook. Very good, no problems.
Now I need advice on password protection. Neither the wizard for the router or the one for the network adaptor mentioned security. On the Belkin website I found info on encryption which seems fairly straightforward, it says to put it on the main pc, but seems to mean every time I want to connect to the internet I need to go and enter my password. Presumably I would need to do this on the laptop as well.
Since I am on broadband and connected all the time, I don't really understand how secure it would be while I am actually connected
I'd appreciate any advice you can give

Hi Anne!
The security you need is to gain access to the wireless network itself. Connecting to the Internet is seperate from connecting to the router via the wireless network.
If you are having to enter a password before you can connect to broadband, and if you have the router security (WEP?) enabled, then you have achieved what you want. As you say, you should have to enter a password from the lap-top as well. Prove it by connecting the main PC and then connecting from the lap-top. If it allows you straight in from the lap-top, you don't have security enabled properly.

sorry Dave, I didn't make myself very clear. I haven't actually put a password in place yet. In the instructions on the belkin website, it seems I have to choose to put in a password consisting of 10 numbers. I will obviously have to write these down as I don't think I can remember ten random numbers, and if I lose them I can't access the internet at all?
I would much prefer to use a 'word' password if anybody knows how I can do this??
While I'm here, I use McAfee on line anti virus on my main pc, and was thinking of downloading a free anti virus for the laptop. Will they interfere with each other?
