hey there,
I have a totally new problem with sfc now. I'm hopin someone could help with this, if you could be so kind. Yesterday i wiped my drive clean using a floppy(webroot disc wiper). Partitioned and installed XP Pro sp2. The first thing i did after my desktop fully loaded was try sfc /scannow. The command prompt window opened for a milli second and then shut down. It won't start at all. What can i do to resolve this? Is there a quick way to get it working.?Please, I really need some instructions.

I think it is working because it is comparing d:\basedir with d:\targetdir. But this isn't the correct setup. Whats the proper setup in my registry for sfc?

essexboy,
well it is a slipstream disc, one that i didn't create, so i was just thinking ahead as i like to use sfc. i do a lot of downloading. movies mainly. i use NOD32 anti-viruse and it does a great job, but as you know no anti-viruse is 100%. And viruses go after windows. I prefer sfc rather than doin a repair install. Im not sure i could even do a repair install with this cd.

Thanks for those links but they don't help in my case. I need someone with a slipsteamed XP Pro sp2 to take a look see in their registry for proper settings, i think. I have been lookin on the net high and low but nothing yet.

essexboy,
If your sfc /scannow is working, I want to compare four values.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup ServicePackSourcePath>D:\ SourcePath>D:\ InstallationSources>D:\
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon SfcQuota>0x00000000 (0)
My values just don't seem right to me. Could you give a rundown of your values to compare?

My source path is d:\xpstream which is where my slipstream data is kept. I have no sfc values, never used it. Looking at the data, you installed from drive D: is that your cd drive ? HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup ServicePackSourcePath>D:\ SourcePath>D:\ InstallationSources>D:\ alue 3 Name: Installation Sources Type: REG_MULTI_SZ Data: D:\XPSTREAM\
Value 4 Name: SourcePath Type: REG_SZ Data: D:\XPSTREAM\
Value 5 Name: ServicePackSourcePath Type: REG_SZ Data: D:\XPSTREAM\
Value 6 Name: CDInstall Type: REG_DWORD Data: 0x0
Value 7 Name: LogLevel Type: REG_DWORD Data: 0x0
Value 8 Name: ServicePackCachePath Type: REG_SZ Data: c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\ServicePackCache

I just copied a little too much, you should have that further down in the keys, that is where updates are stored.

well I tried the repair install idea but I think its just bypassing the repair question and jumpin to a new install. But I did install the Recovery Console after that. I wonder if that would save my but? If i cant use sfc or do a repair install looks like this puppy is goin down sooner or later. Since i installed the recovery console will i be able to do a repair install? sorry im a newbie i need help, lol.

Mark,
1. When you do a repair install, it looks pretty much like a full install, but it doesn't overwrite data.
2. The Repair Console offers certain commands for repair of things like the boot record. It doesn't provide reinstall options.
Hope this helps
Dave
