Had this one come in the over day and can't figure it out, any ideas? (it happens on several different models too.)

My computer fails to find the mass storage device driver for some mass storage devices. I have tried the same device on colleagues' PC's successfully. My operating system is Windows 2000. My colleagues' operationg systems on which the device works are XP and 2000.

Oops, just noticed this is the wrong board! LOL
Can a moderator move this for me?

Don't know if this helps, but I've often had problems with flash drives in USB ports - especially front mounted ports. What I've noticed is that the frequently don't like being connected on an extension lead or USB hub. Connecting directly to the USB port, they usually work fine. If they don't, I'll try the back mounted ports.

Might be worth trying to remove and reinstall USB ports using device manager. The dirvers will reinstall on next bootup.

I am assuming that you are speaking of a USB2.0 external hard drive when you refer to a "mass storage device". Did you receive a "found new hardware" tray note when you plugged it in? Have you checked in the "Device Manager" to see if it is listed there with a trouble icon? Have you checked with the device manufacturer for a firmware/driver update? The manufacturer [whom you do not name] should be ready to furnish a driver at any time. Did you receive a CD with software to be installed when you bought it? Some few [I have a Maxtor I, for instance] do not work with generic drivers, they require a specific one from the CD. Come back and name the make and model and storage capacity.  yquestion

That's that then. Pleased that you've sorted it. I'll lock the thread as it's now resolved.
