Hi
i was installing some software on my PC, the instal loxked up, so i did a reboot, on reboot it could not recognise primary master and sain ntlsdr was missing.
i copied from the instal cd ntldr and ntdetect.com i also had to copy another boot.ini file to root.
it now says that hal.dll is missing or corrupt.
when i try and expand hal from the install cd it says access denied.
i then thought that i would use the install cd to To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. and do a repair, when i select f8 to accept the conditions it will not let go through to the next screen, it just sits there.

i would be gratefull for any ideas.

many thanks

hal.dll is not missing it says that when you have a problem with the boot.ini file (boot.ini refers to wrong harddriveor partition) more likely it will also say that when you have a problem with hard drive like a cable not plugged in well or  a hard drive failure in a raid set.Check you hard drive/drives connections!

but pc still did not boot i left it a few days to give me time to think, then today i thought i would restore the MBR.

OK filed also add FIXMBR when this problem recurs, although it appears you have Gremlins. I forgot all about MBR Cheers for getting back with the answer Rother
