I haven't seen this problem here in the forums yet, so here we go. After installing the automatic updates from microsoft, we normally have to restart for the changes to take effect. Well.....every time i restart I lose my sound. If i try to play an mp3 in media player or real player, i get the message that another program may be using my sound card. Ok. No other sound programs are running. That being said, if I SHUT DOWN my pc for a while, all is well. I have sound, and all is well with the world of XP...............until the next update where I have to restart and the the whole sound thing happens again. Any Ideas?
Thanks for any help
JJ

Re: no sound after restart
anyone????
Re: no sound after restart
haha, I get a chance to respond... Is this a dell machine?
I had similar issues with a Del D620 laptop, what I did to fix it is:
1. Press Windows-key and Break together.
2. Click on the "Hardware" tab
3. Click on "Device Manager" button
4. Find your Audio device under "Sound, video and Game Controllers"
5. Right click on the ACTUAL DEVICE (Sound card) and click "uninstall driver"
6. Reboot and wait for Windows XP's Plug and Pray to kick in... It worked for me
Other than that, I have no clue... You could try to remove the driver completely from the drive, reboot, and reinstall the drivers for the audio card... Followed by another reboot.
If that doesn't work, get insurance on the machine and take a bat to it
and get another one... Just Kidding.
Good luck
