xp dropdown menus in programs have replaced arrows with what look like locks

Post by marirw » Sat Nov 03, 2007 10:57 am

IE (but not Mozilla), and all of my Adobe and Corel and other programs have missing arrows on the drop down menus. The menus work but instead of an arrow I see what appears to be an open lock figure, or a bomb looking figure. Also, instead of check box checks, I get a strange looking U and the check box itself appears misshapen. I don't know if this is a font problem or what controls the arrows and check boxes on XP.  I have a new computer and I have been adding things like crazy and trying to get it set up as rapidly as possible so I am unable to ascertain what I may have done to cause this. While this is primarily a nuisance, I would like to resolve these issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Thank-you...

This is a program drop down menu and is representative of all of my program drop down menus including IE but not Mozilla.

I seem unable to post the image here.

Please see http://www.genealogical-gleanings.com/menu.gif

Thanks again.

I'm wondering if you might have a fonts problem. The icon you are seeing is a mouse icon, usually found in something like Webdings. Have you removed any fonts recently, or even added/changed any?

The only TrueType fonts required by Windows XP are:
Marlett (hidden by default)
Tahoma
Tahoma Bold
Microsoft Sans Serif
Franklin Gothic Medium
Franklin Gothic Medium Italic

You should also make sure you have these:

Times New Roman (all four)
Courier New (all four)
Symbol
Wingdings
Andale Mono
Comic Sans MS
Georgia
Impact
Trebuchet MS
Verdana
Webdings

Programs will pick up symbols and text for menus from the system fonts.

There's a more comprehensive list of fonts installed by XP here:

Thank-you... thank-you

Yes, it was a font issue. I thought I had replaced the important fonts after having removed fonts accidently with a font viewer but they did not work. I found online how to get the fonts from the system CD, which I had given up on until you suggested the font issue, and it immediately replaced the arrows on my drop down menus.  Perfect solution! Have a wonderful week!
